John L M Irby a Reform Leader Dies at 46

Special to The State Laurens South Carolina December 9 Former United States senator and prominent lawyer John L M Irby died at his home in Laurens after Brights disease. He was 46. Irby organized the Reform movement and fueled the 1890 March convention that propelled Wade Hampton to the governorship. He was a Mason and high priest of Rising Sun Chapter Royal Arch Masons. Born Sept 10, 1848, in Laurens, he studied at the University of Virginia and Princeton, was admitted to the bar in 1876, and long aided Hampton’s political rise. Interment will be at Laurens City Cemetery after funeral services conducted by the Masons.
