Drainage in the San Luis Valley Measures and Benefits
Drainage is essential to reclaim alkali soils in the valley with four to six foot ditch depths and about two and a half miles of open ditch per section. Subirrigation can work if water levels are controlled. under drains use planed lumber boxes with valves. Leaching by winter flooding and land leveling are key to removing alkali. Benefits include lower water table, warmer spring soil, stronger root growth, reduced alkali toxicity, cleaner land, reliable crops, more irrigation water, better roads, and fewer pests. Legal reform and large-unit drainage are recommended, with dissemination to landowners through officials.
