Kemmerer Chamber Banquet Hints at Winter Plans

At a War era Kemmerer Chamber of Commerce meeting in City Hall Abner Davis of Pyramid Oil and Refining Syndicate announced a host dinner. The event featured a self serve barbecue, a-la-help-yourself, to counter King Winter delaying a LaBarge trip for a Pyramid opening. Discussion covered next year’s Chautauqua support, county road repair, and emergency bridge funds. Lincoln County Home Demonstrator Laura Winter will address local women on October 1st under Red Cross auspices, with more demonstrations planned countywide. BE Hawke, former Kemmerer Golden Rule manager, has joined J Penney Co as New York buyer.

Kemmerer City Agencies Discuss Mail Delivery

Commissioners plan to meet next week to review the city mail delivery issue amid limited demand in Kemmerer. The executive committee will investigate and report, while city express delivery is discussed with smaller towns already offering it. E. L. Smith resigns as chamber secretary, citing lack of time. the committee may hire a replacement with adequate compensation.

Spudding In witnessed by hundreds at Pyramid Oil well

Hundreds braved storm and mud to witness the spudding in of Pyramid Oil and Refining Syndicate’s first LaBarge field well near Kemmerer on September 24, 1917. Despite weather delays, the barbecue and program proceeded with Abner Davis and Joe Barlant prominent at the event. Six-man rig crews operated the standard rig as development begins, with optimism of at least 50 rigs by year’s end on Lincoln County’s LaBarge field.

Taunts Spark Shooting Affray Near Raymond Idaho

Wesley Herzog, 21, was shot and wounded in a confrontation with Bam Widmer after taunts about shaving his beard. Widmer fired a shotgun at Herzog at the Hall ranch near Raymond, sending him to Mount pelier hospital with a badly lacerated arm. Widmer’s motives linked to religious fervor and defiance as neighbors assisted Herzog. The case awaits trial as Herzog recovers.

New Fossil Company Builds Oil Drilling Push

A new oil drilling company forms from several small firms to work the Fossil field. J. J. Horseman leads Idaho Wyoming rig and reports a 110 foot hole with high grade oil. He expects paying quantities at 500 feet and may drill to 1500 feet. Federal reports say Fossil oil is top grade with over 90 percent gasoline. The well sits a mile from the railroad with downhill piping potential.

Tulsa Oil Man Visits Kemmerer for Largely Holdings Review

Tulsa oil man Dr. Hanna of laBarge Oil Company, with extensive holdings in the laBarge field, arrived from Colorado Springs to oversee interests in Kemmerer. He notes validated holdings and plans real development next spring, with Casper growth due to the oil boom. He will return to Kemmerer early next spring.

Nurse Nellie Smedley Dies After Appendicitis Surgery

Miss Nellie Smedley a popular nurse at Lincoln Miners hospital died last Saturday after an appendicitis operation performed a week earlier. She was 30 and had worked at the institution about a year and a half. Despite initial signs of recovery stomach trouble worsened Friday leading to her sudden death. Her home was in Army, Wyoming. Parents arrived to take the body, which was sent to Evanston for funeral services held at the Mormon Church. Dr Kindall and five sister nurses attended the service. Floral tributes came from local hospital friends and Frontier Miners union members.

A Granger section gang member was killed when a train struck the speeder they rode. The victim had just begun railroad work and was reportedly removing the car when the crash occurred after the crew delayed clearing the track.
