Devastating Floods Hit Monterey City Causes and Casualties
A catastrophic flood devastated Monterey with more than 600 deaths and extensive destruction. Reports describe thousands homeless, property losses around 15 thousand people on rooftops, and a river half a mile wide washing away buildings. A school building tragedy claimed many drownings as walls collapsed during religious rites. In Seattle, Salt Lake Tabernacle choir faced admission fee controversy at the Eisteddfod but performed outdoors to a large crowd. Major fires nearby, plus a fatal poisoning incident from tainted baking powder and a train automobile crash near Creve Coeur lake added to the day’s disaster news.
