Flood Devastates Monterey with Mass Casualties and Homelessness
A historic flood in Monterey Mexico left more than 600 bodies recovered and about fifteen thousand homeless. Property losses mount to twenty million dollars as rains drenched Friday through Sunday. Many buildings collapsed with people on roofs as the Santa Catarina river surged half a mile wide. County votes dry in first election under new law
In a Wednesday special election the county approved prohibition by 3,162 to 1,308. Twenty-three of twenty-five precincts backed dryness, with Nampa and Caldwell showing mixed results. Nampa town narrowly voted against prohibition, while Caldwell favored it by 393 of 727 votes. Payette also supported it, though turnout was light. The dry stance favored rural precincts over towns. Federal news notes Taft backing postal savings banks to fund government bonds and broaden access, urging swift action and stressing appeal to cautious savers.
