Citizens are urged to buy Liberty Bonds to support the war effort. Bonds offer 3 percent interest, payable semi annually, and can be sold at par plus accrued interest. A $60 bond is affordable, acts like saving for the future, and can become a commemorative keepsake after repayment. Local banks will facilitate purchases.
The Kemmerer Chamber of Commerce held a meeting last Monday with discussions on the 2,000,000,000 liberty bond drive. The executive committee was ordered to organize an active campaign, likely on June 5 registration day, to promote bond sales and support Red Cross work.
Federal officials press to enforce the 18th Amendment as two arrests surface in Kemmerer for selling whiskey to soldiers of Company H. The law imposes a fine up to one thousand dollars or a year in jail, with possible combined penalties. Saloon operators cooperate with local troops to curb bootlegging.
Mr and Mrs 8. A. Sawaya welcome a baby girl born in Kemmerer. Both mother and child are reported healthy and thriving. Friends extend congratulations to Mr Sawaya on the birth.
The Green River Petroleum Company will receive its first car of machinery in Opal today and haul it to the LaPargee Fields. The new Cheyenne-led company, with William Jeffers as president, leases state school lands in LaBarge. Ben F. Drayton of Thermopolis will supervise field work, noted as a top Montana drill master. Road conditions between Opal and LaBarge worsened last week, but improved weather is hoped to aid the work.
Installing machinery reports from LaBarge show a massive standard rig being erected for active work, the largest outlay of machinery and material ever seen locally. Seven loads of material were held up in transit or at the site as construction proceeds.
Dominick Poucht of Sabet and G W Mair of Elk Basin United Oil Co left Sunday for Elk Basin in the north of the state to inspect the company property. Mr Mair is selling stock in the area while Mr Poucht presents several countrymen at Sublet who expect to take stock in the company.
A group of new oil men arrived in Kemmerer this week to inspect local fields led by Z J Herschman, formerly of Fossil, who holds large interests in the district. Chas K Costelli of Twin Falls Idaho and P T Denney also visited the area, with several California oil field parties waiting in the region.
Captain Waugh urges Wyoming men to enlist in Company H with offers of early camp near Tacoma and possible deployment to France after Pershing's division. Inducements include exemption from June 5 registration and a faster path to active service. New members include Mills, Hate, Head, and Millon as outdoor drills resume in Kemmerer.
Kemmerer Red Cross Society is in running order with women knitting and making comfort bags for Company H. A public meeting is set for 1 40 PM at the New Kemmerer Theatre to explain the Red Cross role and its war work to both men and women.
Mrs P J Quealy helped organize a local Red Cross chapter and started a movement at Rock Springs. She planned a meeting at Superior by request and formed an auxiliary of 24 high school students. She will travel to Granger next week to promote a similar chapter drive.
On June 5 a national registration day is observed as a holiday in many areas with Kemmerer and Lincoln County towns likely to mark it as a semi holiday and most businesses closed. About 50 travelers registered at the County Clerk's office last week and all away from home must file registration cards at their temporary residence. The questions to be asked include full name home address date of birth citizenship status present trade employment dependents and draft exemption grounds.
Corianton and The Walters Company delivered a strong show at the Lyceum. Tonight they return with In a Woman's Power followed by The Rosary tomorrow night, drawing audiences with their religiously themed material and dramatic staging.
A wedding ceremony was held a few days ago in Diamondville for Ralph Boring and Mia Em, both residents of Diamondville. The couple exchanged vows in a small service attended by family and friends.
Big gathering planned at City Ball Park for Memorial Day parade at 10:00 am led by Kemmerer band and Company H. Civil and Spanish American War veterans honored alongside local unions Red Cross lodges and fraternal groups with ceremonies at the cemetery after the parade.
The Kemmerer High School senior class plans a merged graduation and close night on June 1 at the High School Assembly hall. No guest speaker is planned, with a simple program reflecting wartime restraint.
