Disease threat to western forests prompts state lookout
The agriculture department assigns Vernon Simmons to survey for white pine blister rust now spreading from infected eastern shipments. The disease endangers five needle pines currants and gooseberries across Wyoming and the Rocky Mountain and Pacific coast states with 240 900 000 in timber at risk. There is no cure, so residents are urged to report outbreaks to prevent forest loss for current and future generations.
