State Board Faces 6000 Valuation Clash In Railroad Tax Debate

Hon J A Black and Shott Big Pinny Jane return from ranching duties and head to Evans on for the August board of county commissioners meeting. Black argues the state board of equalization should value railroads at 1 per mile to reflect actual costs, claiming current Nebraska rules understate railroad values compared to Wyoming. He cites a Nebraska auditor’s claim that new Pacific railroad is valued at 107 500 per mile, but the state taxes only a fifth of that, leaving assessment well below true cost, and contends a fair levy could drop to about one third last year’s level if railroad values rise.
