Durnford-Cretacious Contest Heard in U S Land Office

The contest between Mrs Nelida ford and Cretaceous Oil Co over eighty acres in Piney Oil field was heard in the U S Land office at Evanston on Monday and Tuesday. Witnesses included Lackey Huston Beagrove and others, with testimony opposing coal value and favoring oil claimants. The examiner Deitz reported the oil of low value and the claimants anticipate a favorable decision for the oil company.

Morrow Buys Interest in Kemmerer Furniture Firm

A significant business deal closes today with Andrew Morrow purchasing A P Heits’s stake in the Kemmerer Hardware and Furniture Co. Heits had sold his interest to Morrow amid a reshaping of ownership. The firm, formed in 1910 by Heits Reil and Ht. Hm con, has grown steadily. Embree, long absent in Georgia, is noted as a former member during the Armistice period.

Wyoming La Barge and Dry Pley Oil Company Formed

J. W. Haddenham announced the organization of the Wyoming La Barge and Dry Pley Oil company in the upper country. The Lincoln county group leads the roster with some Salt Lake capitalists. Operations begin within 30 days with drilling after preliminary development near the Cretaceous and Lincoln Idaho tracts, about 10 miles south of the properties.

John Xenios, a Kemmerer youth who spoke English imperfectly, earned France’s Croix de Guerre after a Champagne sector action. He and two companions surprised a German group, forcing surrender of 45 enemy soldiers with 80 casualties, and he was wounded in the leg before returning home.

Swanson Upgrades Ranch Fordson Fueled by Big Piney Oil

Hugo Swanson of Marbleton spent Monday in Kemmerer on business and returned to install a new Fordson truck on his ranch. He reports using Big Piney oil to run the tractor, aiming to improve efficiency from the nearby Bre Piney fields.

Prominent Kemmerer Physician Dies in Nebraska

Telegram from Omaha reports Dr. W. A. Hocker’s death after long illness. A pioneer physician in western Wyoming, he practiced in Evanston for 25 years and helped establish the State Insane Asylum. He later served Kemmerer, held county roles, and directed health efforts during epidemics. Survived by seven children. Funeral in Evanston.

New Contracting Firm Formed in Kemmerer

J K Wellman who ran a plumbing business bought from Dan Sullivan and sold to W E Pitt forms a general contracting firm with his brother A H Wellman who arrived from Leavenworth Kansas. They have early projects including remodeling the former Kohns liquor house building adding to E L Smith residence and constructing the Holmes building.

Holmes Building to Be Rushed to Completion

Plans for the E W Holmes building to replace the Kemmerer Soda Bottling Works shack are in the contractor J K Wollmans hands work starts at once and the two story 26 by 60 foot fireproof structure will include a storeroom on the upper floor. New factory machinery will be installed next year due to late delivery. Holmes arrived in Kemmerer in 1915 from Frontier to start a painting business.
