Trusted official of the post office faces grand jury indictment charging him with robbing mails over a sixteen year period. The case alleges decades of theft carried out by a trusted employee with bonds set at 25000 dollars.
Robert F Palmer Joliet letter carrier testified before Commissioner Foote admitting a sixteen year pattern of mail theft. He confessed to inspectors Elston and Llewellyn after two test letters pointed to his guilt. Palmer held a $25 000 bond and faced a federal grand jury.
Gotlieb Hoffman was seriously burned while fighting flames on the John Fridley farm southeast of Elwood yesterday. The blaze damaged the Florence area farm and injured Hoffman during the blaze response.
Elwood October 16. A massive blaze at John Fridley’s farm three miles southeast of Elwood on the Chicago road in Florence township destroys barns cribs sheds and their contents. Sparks from a traction engine ignite the fire. 150 volunteers battle the flames as the home is saved with great effort. One man Gottlieb Hoffman is badly burned but expected to recover. eight hogs perish in the blaze.
A late day fire burned a hog stock and grain structures, kept burning through the night, with neighbors on guard duty. Hoffman sustained burns early, treated by a physician, and sent home. Reports from his home say he endures great pain and will be laid up for weeks.
William Green, held four months in county jail to determine his residence, was sent to Kanakakee after an examination by Drs. Higgins and Curtiss in county court. He claimed many national origins and confessed fondness for dogs, joking about eating a bloodhound as a delicate dish. He provided no clear residence, and his case ends with continued uncertainty.
Fallman and Nelson appear likely to win the erection of the Seventh ward No 3 Engine House as the lowest bidder. The city would save about 1500 compared with initial bids after minor revisions by the architect. Bidders for plumbing and gas fitting remained at their original offers.

A wrecked relief train near Metz with refugees adds dead and burned. In Minneapolis, the Northwestern Consolidated Mills burns with the city fire department battling the blaze.
A rear building fire at 111 Joliet Street this afternoon around 3 40 resulted in a routine department response. The blaze was not serious and damage was insignificant.

Contractor Adam Groth is erecting two bank buildings in Joliet while pushing a landmark office structure on East Cass Street opposite the Joliet Pure Ice plant. The small building is designed as an elaborate model of its kind and should be ready for occupancy before winter.
Word reached here that George Gustafson age 22 of 609 Clinton street has been seriously injured in Portland Oregon. Details are lacking and Gustafson has been in the west for two months.

City pastors join tomorrow at noon for a farewell luncheon at Hobbs cafe to honor Reverend C. G. Reynolds Reverend F A Moon and Reverend W R Leslie as they leave the community for new fields.
