A lively gab fest at the Steel Works club featured satirical lectures and jests aimed at Republicans Democrats and local figures. Speakers including Rev Alexander Lewis James Ferriss and George Barr skewered populism and party strategy amid crowd-style roasts and farcical interludes.
City Engineer Stevens and Spring Creek Drainage District clash as neither side has laid pipes. The district waits for a dry channel to install mains across Washington street while the city delays until the water is drained. A likely temporary cofferdam may be needed to make joints. The council told the district to finish promptly, but no reply is reported.
A northern woman was wooed and won as speakers urged support for the Republican ideal in American politics. The talk favored the two old parties while criticizing third party threats and impeachment talk over saloon closures. The Imperial quartet performed and Supt. F. M. Savage sent a message read by Chairman Spencer. Mr. Walker lives in LaSalle and was praised for his stance and work with the Steel Works club.
Thomas Dolg of New Lenox a pioneer resident visited Joliet yesterday for the first time in four years. For forty years before this he averaged more than four visits weekly. Despite advancing years the pioneer is well preserved.
Clinton Iowa May 22 Frank Hammond alias Bullawa Citawaga, claimed son of a high roller in jungle society, has been released from jail and ordered to stay away. Authorities say he is a liar and an undesirable in Joliet prison. he was rearrested on arrival here to face trial for fatally harming a Clinton resident.
M H Roberts, a lineman for Illinois Steel at the coke ovens north of the city, touched a 2300 volt line at 5 30 pm and hung unconscious by his safety belt. His co workers shut off the current and carried him to his home at 1010 Irving street for first aid. He survived despite severe burns and paralysis on the left side.
Last night at the carnival featured confetti night with free attractions a trick cyclist and rings and bars exhibition from Columbus Ohio. Attendance matched the week’s standard and the final day is expected to draw the largest crowd yet. Voting for the most popular lady shows Anna Stamge leading Julia Scagnelli and others in a close race.
Clarence F. Louver chosen as delegate and Will Cushing as alternate to attend the State Convention of Letter Carriers in Quincy. June L. R. F. Palmer presides over the local branch. Andrews' Brewing Co seeks to prove the Joliet Bottling Co caused the alleged debt dispute. A $678 claim plus costs from September 24 is cited with costs unsettled. Jurors were discharged until Monday. Other cases postponed as court adjourns.
Engineer Harris says depot removal is underway under Michigan Central and Rock Island supervision. He expects the depot moved by Monday with track elevation to begin soon, weather permitting. Mayor Cronin believes results will come as work proceeds and urges timely action.
Joliet National Bank committee quietly advances work on a new building at Clinton and Chicago avenues. Brick samples were narrowed to a light yellow brick, praised for strength and appearance. First story to be stone or granite. architect Julian Barnes refines plans, with site clearance delaying start for about a month.
The latest smallpox case involves Miss Agnes Guldenzoph aged about one. The family on Second Avenue and Baker Street was quarantined and Woodlawn School closed after exposure. The house at 403 DeKalb had been fumigated days earlier after H C Bird, a Chicago street car conductor, had visited.
