A large Dellwood auditorium encampment of Spanish American War veterans heard Congressman Howard M. Snapp advocate Roosevelt's navy expansion and a strong standing army. He praised veterans' rewards, argued peace through readiness, and linked past wars to current defense needs.
Joliet and surrounding area endure a severe shift from cold to extreme heat. The first hot wave of the season drives thermometers to the top, with readings around 91 on Saturday as residents cope with broiling conditions.
Rossi Casshe, 1005 North Collins street, drowned in a private pond in Riley's slough while hjelp by two boys to rescue his struggling friend Tony Verucho who escaped. Verucho survived after being pulled from the water aided by William and Henry Renz as coroner reported the inquest and body recovered three hours later.

Firefighters fought the blaze about forty five minutes, delaying the Rock Island and Peoria trains by about twenty five minutes.
The Illinois Department of Spanish American War Veterans closed its fifth annual encampment on Saturday night. Before the speaking, five companies from the Third Regiment of the Illinois National Guard drilled on the Chasewall grounds, followed by a Modern Woodmen drill team performance to applause from hundreds in the grand stands.
Charles F. Goodspeed departs tonight for Springfield to attend the first annual convention of the Illinois Abstractors Association, where he serves as president. He is joined by Charles N. Ridgewood resident Miss Thora Sorrenson was gravely hurt last night when stepping from an eastbound Cass street car as it halted. She is hospitalized in grave condition with severe head injuries. the conductor signaled the car to stop to allow her to alight.
