Historic quake leaves hundreds of thousands dead and injured as the homeless count rises to one million. Authorities report massive destruction across cities and towns, with relief efforts mobilized to assist survivors.
Telegraph Special reports quake shocks in Italy and Sicily as the Mes s ina consulate is destroyed. Consul Cheney and family are dead. Dozens named among victims. Calabrian and Sicilian relief under way with troops, doctors, and Red Cross aiding starving survivors.
In Richards street near Third avenue a wreck tied a buggy and Willard and Lang escaped unharmed. Boles suffered a badly damaged buggy and was forced to press on with his horse. Rain and darkness hindered visibility as brakes failed on the slick pavement.
William Chidsey son of a South Ottawa street lunchroom owner faced assault with intent to kill charges after allegedly firing at Earl Caswell. Thomas Bahm an 18 year old who dodged police for nearly two months turned himself in to Detective Hennessey. A warrant charged him with receiving stolen property but with Assistant State's Attorney King approval the charge was reduced to disorderly conduct. Bahm pleaded guilty and paid a 25 dollar fine plus costs. He had bought about a hundred pounds of railroad brass from boys who stole it from a car in the Bee and E yards late October and sold it to a junk dealer. He had fled town when the warrant was issued and returned yesterday.
City officials plan to replace horse powered hose carts with two combination wagons equipped with chemical engines and hose to boost working strength while reducing crew. Mayor Cronin Marshall Langdon and Alderman Harney praised the tested apparatus in Galesburg but will continue inquiries before purchase. A letter was sent to Marshall Horan in Chicago and officials will inspect further in the city.
Naperville, Ill. Mrs. John Kleeman, long time resident, died by suicide last night by jumping into a cistern. The notice adds an address and times for an office appearance in the Young building, Room 20, for Thursday December 31.

Joliet aims to raise $1,000 for relief to Italian disaster victims through proceeds from The Messiah at Central Presbyterian church. The Joliet Oratorio Society, backed by the Commercial club and local papers, plans a committee after the year to collect funds if ticket sales fall short.
