A Baltimore and Ohio freight train struck near Twenty seventh Street last night, causing a wreck that consumed the near Overshoe Mall area and halted service. The Aston train was due at 10 20 p m today.
A Chicago Alton mail train derailed after a Baltimore and Ohio freight strike near Twenty seventh street and California avenue. Passengers including Harvey E. Wood and former Sheriff Joseph Ray escaped injury but the mail car burned with registered letters and Christmas gifts believed destroyed. Firefighters lacked water as the car was leveled by flames, and Joliet officials sought to determine if Joliet mail was saved.
Mrs Augusta Ranft filed for bankruptcy in Chicago federal court listing liabilities of 58 803 dollars and assets of 294 00 dollars. Creditors include First National Bank of Joliet and Louis Sehring of Joliet. Ranft, a former bottling business owner on Bluff Street, now resides in Chicago and is represented by attorney George D. Ritchie. She sold her second Bluff Street venture to Prof. B F Wood and later left town amid legal disputes.
Mary Bogden, wife of Meeker Avenue saloonkeeper Joseph Bogden, was fined 50 dollars and costs for assaulting Theresa Papike, an eighteen year old servant. The case drew attention to alleged saloon misconduct and possible license revocation, with prosecutors pledging further action.
In examination before master in chancery, Charles M. Fish concedes making erasures on exhibits admitted as evidence, admitting to duplicative bills seen during the proceedings.

A blaze damaged the Davis store on Jackson Street and Park Avenue as tinsel and tissue drapings burned near the chimney. Firemen fought the flames for some time after Mrs. Davis called for help.
