Old Settlers Set Gathering Plans For Sept 12

The executive committee of the Old Settlers' Association of Will County met at the Commercial Club and outlined plans for the annual meeting on Saturday September 12 in the Auditorium Building at Clinton and Chicago streets. The morning program will include short papers by county officers and a necrology, with ten minute talks and musical numbers, followed by afternoon lectures and visiting. A prize will be awarded to the oldest settler in Will County present, and a nominating committee was named for the Union meeting.

Poisoned by Bath Laborer Dies in Chicago Area

Pasquala Fahla aged 35 dies in St Joseph's hospital from an aggravated case of blood poisoning caused by washing his face in sewage contaminated water on a Joliet National Bank construction site. He was injured when a heavy timber struck him and later bathed his wounds. coroner to hold an inquest.

Word spread of events and gatherings as old settlers anticipate their yearly reunion on September 12 with much enthusiasm and expectation.

Rail executive warns election will shape railroad future

T P Shonts president of the Chicago and Alton and Clover Leaf railroads arrived in Chicago en route to Centerville Iowa for a homecoming. He avoided political bias but warned that railroad property and investment depend on the election outlook. He noted widespread curtailment of improvements and spending with only necessary purchases like 1000 steel cars for the Alton. He tours the system twice yearly to assess its condition.

Mayor Cronin to address two conventions next month

Mayor John R. Cronin will attend two conventions in a two week span late in the month. The Illinois Mayors Association meeting in LaSalle September 24 will cover the deep waterway project and local government. The national convention in Omaha September 30 to October 2 will discuss Home Rule for Cities. Alderman Harney and John J. Nicholson will assist during the mayor's absence.

Orators Selected for Labor Day Outing at Dellwood Park

Edward R. Wright president of the State Federation of Labor will speak at Joliet Central Trades & Labor Council Labor Day picnic at Dellwood park. Mayor John R. Cronin Judge George J. Cowing Rev. Alexander Lewis Harvey E. Wood and D R Burke join as local speakers. No parade this year with events at an auditorium and planned sports before the amphitheater. City wide holiday with five thousand children back to school on Monday and a large crowd expected at the park.

Jury Blames Rock Island for Crossing Accident

A jury found Rock Island at fault for a fatal grade crossing crash near Scott and Jefferson streets that killed Patrick Dixon. Witnesses, including Engineer Ty Foster, detailed signals, gate failures, and a flagman’s diminished signal as the train stopped after braking.

Police Capture Notorious City Possum During Midnight Chase

In downtown Chicago Captain James Corcoran and Patrolman Michael Diamond pursued a possum up and down Mc Graws corners near Van Buren and Chicago streets. The captain struck with a club, the animal fell, and a shoe shiner offered two dollars for the carcass. The creature was prepared for a midnight feast at the police station, with Diamond lamenting his broken club and relief the animal was not a polecat.

Street Car Fender Crashes Motor Cyclist on Ottawa

Bert Delancy bicycle dealer on a fast motor cycle crashed after a Boulevard Heights street car turned north on Ottawa street failing to proceed straight on Jefferson street. The fender struck Delancy as he rode down Jefferson near Peas and Ottawa, injuring him as he was entering town around six o'clock. Conductor Shern and Motorman Jorgenson were reported involved.
