A prairie fire yesterday afternoon near Eastern avenue between Third and Fourth avenues was put out before causing significant damage. No injuries were reported and authorities contained the blaze promptly.

Fire Threatens C Hacker Co Woodworking Plant

A morning blaze at the C Hacker company woodworking plant on Collins street alarms neighbors who report the fire after 5 oclock. Chief Langdon cites an overheated boiler in an engine room as the likely cause. Loss estimate unavailable but owners expect under 500 dollars. Firemen extinguish the flames within 30 minutes, wounding the roof and forcing removal of nearby horses.

Odette Club Entertainment Hosts Euchre Event

The Odette club girls enjoyed a pleasant afternoon at Mrs John Poh on Benton street. Euchre at two tables led to Lola Mather winning first prize and Clem Whitmore taking consolation. A two course luncheon followed.

Youthful Burglar Tries Escape From Station

Ernest Meyers, a youth caught rifling Beuttenmuller and Spelter stock, attempted a bold jailbreak at the North Chicago police station. He worked all night on a back wall with a makeshift iron tool, lifting bricks about two feet high before the effort was stopped and Meyers confined in county jail.

Economy linemen out demand more money

Sixteen outside linemen with Economy Light & Power quit their posts after demanding a 50 cent wage increase from 3.50 to 4.00. General Manager Charles A. Munroe said there is no rush to rehire and encouraged men to seek other jobs if they can do better, while foremen seek higher pay.

Putland Slips Breaks Arm Delays College Opening

Word from Miss Scheidt of Pitland's Business College says W. D. Putland, president, slipped and broke his right arm while supervising the Rockford college opening. He planned a Joliet visit later in the week, but the trip is postponed two or three weeks. He is recuperating at home in Belvedere.

Governor Deneen Requisition for Frank Redmond Return

Springfield August 22 Governor Deneen issued a requisition to Wisconsin for the return to Joliet of Frank Redmond held on parole violation. His Wisconsin term at Fond du Lac expires September 5 and he was sent from LaSalle to Joliet June 27, 1904 for a store incident at Short and Haemmerer in April 1905.
