La Follette Denounces Trusts At Chautauqua Speech

Senator Robert M. La Follette of Wisconsin delivered a three hour address on Our Government denouncing trusts and machine politics. He praised President Roosevelt for leading a campaign against trusts and urged stronger remedies to purge corruption, warning that free competition in grain markets and fair pricing remain elusive.

Plainfield Meeting Highlights Drainage and Tax Dispute

Plainfield held its first primary campaign meeting led by State’s Attorney Heise and J. H. Garnsey with Editor Blakely presiding. Garnsey discussed Will County’s suit to force the sanitary district to pay about $9,000 to the county and defended valley interests against northern district influence. Heise praised Republican gains in Will County and lauded Mr Snapp’s loyalty and candidacy.

Sanitary District Fes Complaint Against Assessments

The Sanitary District of Chicago protested current assessments in Lockport and DuPage, contending valuations of $2,573,900 in spoil banks and stone excavations are excessive. Hearings postponed to week after primaries. last year’s taxes remain uncollected due to injunctions. Primaries Aug. 8. polls 6 to 5.

The Northeastern Republican club holds a Sunday meeting at 2:20 PM in North-Eastern hall on Meeker Avenue. Members and friends urged to attend and hear the candidates. Primaries August 6 polls open 6 to 5.

Elgin Watch Factory Workers Cheer Snapp in Joliet Visit

Sixty Elgin motion department employees rode in a special car to Joliet and greeted Congressman H. M. Snapp with a song promising support. The group spent the day sightseeing and showed lively enthusiasm for the congressman.

Crow Seeks Republican Nomination Cited For Democratic Votes

Adam S Crow, once a Good Enough Democrat, runs for Congress as a Republican candidate. He testified he voted for Cleveland over Blaine and for Bryan over McKinley, and for Lewis Steward in 1892. He also says he has voted the Democratic ticket at nearly every election since.

Ex-minister Graff and companion arraigned in Kalamazoo

Ex-minister Jamin F. Graff and Eleanor Martin were arraigned in municipal court and waived examination. Bonds were set at $1,000 each. Mrs Graff seeks divorce and both await grand jury action as they face charges including illegal cohabitation and forgery amid a social purity controversy in Kalamazoo Michigan.

Blaze in frame barn caused by a boy’s match and cigarette

A fire partially destroyed a frame barn owned by Marko Gobodnik at 107 Liberty Street yesterday around 4 PM. Acting Chief Ruddy and fire companies 3 and 4 arrived to extinguish it. Earlier garbage-box flames near Nei s Street and Royce Avenue were reported at 9:80 AM, with Mrs Shaw notifying the department.
