In Joliet on April 19 1898 Lewis Steward sues Robert A Childs in the Eighth Illinois district. Testimony includes Adam S Clow aged 85 farmer from Wheatland on the 1892 general election board noting Republican clerks and a mixed ticket vote. Steward asserts a true record vote as cast.

Jail staff swap as Wills takes two week vacation

John J. Wills, county jailer, begins a two week vacation. In his absence Deputy Sheriff Edward Powers and Assistant Jailer Keeley oversee the jail. Powers and Keeley returned Saturday after their fourteen day rest. Primaries Aug. 8. Polls open 6 to 5.

Local Pressmen Picnic at Crumey’s Farm Near Troy

The Printing Pressmen Union held its annual picnic at Crumey's farm near Troy with about fifty attendees arriving by wagonettes. Events included races won by Raymond Shea and a distance throw led by William O'Gonnell with Steve Vert second. A photographer recorded the groups. Sheriff O G Addleman chief deputy of the United States marshal's office Springfield NL spent Saturday in the city as a guest of relatives and called on Sheriff Williams. Addleman formerly resided here.

Lockport Rail Clerk Arrested for Mail Theft in Chicago

Claude W. Becker of Lockport was arrested on charges of rifling mail and stealing money and checks after an investigation led by his wife. He confessed to multiple thefts and is held to a federal grand jury in 2500 dollars bond. A Chicago woman is said to be an associate, with letters and funds taken from packages opened at a South Side flat. Becker admits stealing mail during transit on the Chicago & Northwestern Railway and cashing an express money order, with pay cited at 1100 dollars a year.

Miss Mary Crowley Seriously Hurt Alighting From Rockdale Car

Miss Mary Crowley working in Nate Bagnell's home on South Center street was severely injured when she tried to alight from a Rockdale car near Marion street. She received serious bruises and facial disfigurement. taken to a physician, she remained able to be about the house the next day.

Huge crowd packs Dellwood Park for holiday gathering

A large crowd filled Dellwood Park yesterday evening seeking a breathing spot. The event marked the largest attendance in the institution’s history with cars heavy on the roads. Amusement attractions and the Chautauqua were in full swing for holiday visitors.
