Lightner and Hutchinson announce relocation to Mrs. Bixby’s brick building formerly used by T. Collinson. The store promises a full dry goods stock including garments, silks, trimmings, underwear, yarns, outerwear, blankets, groceries, and a wide shoe line. They thank customers for support since March and invite trading in their expanded quarters.
Nebraska buys 3 200 voting machines at 500 each totaling 1 600 000. Wheat losses in North Dakota reach 2 000 000 bushels from hail. A Johnson county farmer sold 1 1 2 acres of tobacco for 170. A Polish Canadian bankrupt with 100 000 liabilities. A drift of miscellaneous notes and curiosities closes with soap use abroad and fly deterrents.
General Shafter notes for the First Nebraska regiment show 46 commissioned officers with 18 promoted, 15 resigned, 9 discharged, and 3 killed or died of wounds. Enlisted totals stand at 1,285 with 1,246 joining, 823 remaining to be mustered out, and various discharge or death figures.
Hastings records describe the hardships of enlistment and service. It lists the First Nebraska volunteers mustered in May 10 1898 in Lincoln and detailed movements from San Francisco to Manila Bay and Cavite. It covers battles at Manila Santa Mesa Quingue Calumpit and final mustering out in San Francisco August 23 1899.
