The report recounts a disastrous Monday for Britain with regiments and an artillery battery captured by the Boers and British casualties estimated over two thousand. It also notes Admiral Dewey’s engagement to Mrs W B ilizn and surveys Burlington railroad earnings and Cuban war losses with casualty tallies and reconcentration effects.
Prof. Arthur Cadero Viaagerasg of the Havana Academy of Science estimates Cuba’s 1895 to 1898 population at about 1.546 million with 532000 colored residents. He notes 40 percent of whites and 72 percent of negros illiterate, and a male to female ratio of 54 to 46. The study estimates the Spanish army sent to Cuba during the war.
A Nebraska brought mascot rooster named Dewey traveled to Manila Bay era camps including Camp Merritt Camp Otis Honolulu and Camp Santa Mess. Dewey fought in battles earned fame as victor at Camp Otis and died January 24 1899 of a fever. Funeral followed with guards band and taps as the rooster honored like Admiral Dewey.
The Village Board of Trustees of Diller Nebraska will hold a special session at Henry Eatons Shoe Shop on Monday November 13 1899 at 7 PM. The purpose is to levy a special tax or settle and pay for building a sidewalk along North Railway street lots 3 and 4 block 13.
