A large mechanical excavator works on Lincoln State Capitol grounds in a two week dig. A 25 foot diameter hole reaches 35 feet with five more feet expected to reach water. Researchers plan to study sandstone strata for the foundation of the new 5 million dollar capitol, blasting the last ten feet through rough sandstone.
Thirty four students took the Eighth grade county examination at Jansen last Thursday and Friday. A new ball and bat are welcome prizes as precinct spelling contest is set for Friday afternoon April 15 in the grammar room. District No 59 Helen Hugaes watcher. Dist No 2 Reba Yeakle teacher. Dist No 67 D M Doerksen teacher. Dist No 2 Mrs Rusa Wiebe Doerkserr teacher. Dist No 65 Blanche Leighty. Dist No 97 Jansen School. Winners go to Fairbury April 28 to compete with county schools. Mrs Olivia True of Fairbury will pronounce the words. Come out and witness the precinct contest at the School House.
Oman Goble twenty one years old died after kerosene from a can spilled on smouldering coals in a heating stove causing an explosion. He escaped through a back door, left bloody footprints, while his wife and infant fled through a window. He died six hours later.
Jefferson County Post of the American Legion members travel in two cars across the county to advertise a Double Header Show in Fairbury next Monday and Tuesday. The group includes H W Fouts T Hatfield Frank Fox David mery Ed S Goodrich Jak Heasty and Harlane Hunt promoting local talent and ex service men will appear in pictures with a Legion male quartet providing vocal selections.
J H Fordson notes farm naming and signage while visiting Herman Korte two miles from Orleans. Korte keeps over sixty Holsteins with thirty four milking, sold 200 tons of milk last year earning $7000. His 160 acre farm supplies feed for seven tons and hosts a new modern home and electrified dairy barn with milking machines.
Britain will pay 25 million dollars in principal and interest next Friday as part of a 122 million dollar war debt incurred for silver dollar purchases to ease India’s silver shortage. Authorities expect the payment to be made, with a further 47 million due on May.
A well attended shower in Jansen Tuesday evening honored Mr and Mrs Elmer Olson with many gifts. The event organized by the ladies of Jansen was a commendable welcome to newcomers. Mrs Zook visited Omaha earlier in the week. Mr Bexton departed Tuesday for Kansas City to consult a physician.
Local notes report visits by F H Wall and family to B H Mackelberger. Henry Barnes of Belleville kansas attended F E Sprague home. Fragments describe weather shifts, church visits, farm construction, and upcoming oil drilling activity near Jansen. A baby girl born to H B Buller in Lampman Saskatchewan is noted along with frost damage estimates in Dinuba California.
At the I C O F Hall in Fairbury a Women s Auxiliary to the American Legion Post of Jefferson county was organized with temporary officers elected: Mrs T S Hatfield President Mrs H T ast Vice President Miss Mabel Helvey Secretary and Mrs E S Goodrich Treasurer Mrs H A Friesen named to the Membership Committee from Jansen A lunch of chicken sandwiches pickles cake and coffee followed.
More Nebraska farmers are turning to sheep as a profitable sideline alongside poultry. A small, well bred flock yields annual profit through wool, lambs, and ewes. The State College of Agriculture promotes sheep raising and offers literature on handling wool, lambing, and farm flock management via county farm bureau offices.
A careful examination shows that late freezes destroyed nearly all apples peaches pears plums and apricots in this section. Wheat and barley suffered little damage while alfalfa was knocked down with the first cutting pushed back. Kansas Globe-News.
The barber business operated by H. G. Hunt was sold last Thursday to I. J. Hooker of Marshalltown Iowa. Hooker took possession immediately after the deal. Plans for Mr Hunt remain unclear.
The Lincoln Telephone and Graph Company plans a much larger type in the new directory, contrasting with Farmers Telephone Co. The change may hinder readers with poor sight who would gain little from the larger print.
