The Hunchback and Palace of the King at English's

Viola Allen and company performed The Hunchback yesterday and In the Palace of the King last night at English's. The Hunchback, by James Sheridan Knowles, drew a small crowd amid praise for Allen's Julia while Crawford and Stoddard's melodrama delighted a larger audience, though critics found it lacking in unity and meaning. The review highlights Allen's lively, expressive portrayal and notes the melodrama’s sensational yet hollow structure, with a standout scene between Dolores Mendoza and Don John offering modest emotion amidst overall theatrical excess.
