Volcan Souffriere continues to erupt blanketing St Vincent with sulfurous gas and smoke. Thousands of victims lie where they fell as meager aid reaches the devastated region, now largely inaccessible due to ongoing eruptions.
Reports from Castralas say nearly 2000 people perished as the Soufrière of St. Vincent erupted, covering land with ashes and lava. The death toll rises while bodies remain unburied and the crater remains active, with Kingston fearing further upheaval.
James Taylor of the Roraima recounts the harbor destruction at St Pierre. He describes ash falling, blistering heat, and scenes of drowning passengers, including a boy who could not swallow ashes. He escaped by leaping overboard as waves carried him out to sea and back to wreckage.
Representative Overstreet expresses confidence that the army bill amendment will be concurred in and that there will be no objection to the sale clause for the Arsenal. TheHouse action aims to approve the amendment and advance the measure.
Washington May 13 Chairman Hull of the House military committee agreed to let the Senate amendment on abandoned arsenals and more ground near cities stay in the army appropriation bill. He favored striking it out but yielded to Representative Overstreet’s interest. Overstreet expects no objections and the bill may avoid conference. The piece also notes obsequies for Gen Rosecrans, nominations to the Senate, and new patents from Indiana inventors.
A catastrophic blaze at Sheraden leaves twenty four dead and two hundred two injured. Doctors fear many of the injured will succumb to severe burns as the casualty numbers rise and rescue efforts continue through the night.

The President directs Secretary Root to grant the Cuban Court of Appeals authority to review Rathbone's testimony in the Cuban postal fraud case, with power to admit additional evidence. General Wood is ordered to promulgate a law extending the right of review to similar cases, under the Platt Amendment. The move aims to ensure full review of convictions, preserving rights as Cuba nears self rule.
