An east-bound Union Pacific freight train collided with another in heavy fog at a crossing in North Topeka Kansas. Two stockmen died and seven people were injured. The dead included McCandless Nakotama and John Parks. Injured workers were E W Rucker Miles J Fields John Buzzard John Hammerlund Ed Arnold and others.
Chin Hee a Chinese laundryman, arrested at 11:15 PM on charges of murdering Dong Gong Tehun known as Doc Lung. Detectives Gerber Colbert Dugan Houser Manning describe motive, alibi contradictions, and a cash drawer clue strong against Hee. Evidence cites currency change after the crime and knowledge of a spring-loaded cash till.
A CGW tank car filled with oil broke on a bridge over the Grand River near Talmadge. The car fell, dragging three more cars and the caboose into fire. Conductor George Miller of St. Joseph, Missouri, died in the blaze as the 150 foot bridge burned.
President elect Palma was feted by the Spanish community at the Cuban Club in Cienfuegos with a banquet and ball last night. Laborers later gave him a decorated breakfast on the wharf. The presidential party travels next to Santa Clara then Matanzas, then by steamer to Havana.
The Journal will publish on Thursday May 15 a complete description of the Soldiers' Monument in a permanent form with illustrations. It includes a facsimile of James Whitcomb Riley's original manuscript of The Soldier and Riley's hymn The Messiah of the Nations.
