Our French Critics in Paris and American reception
The Washington Star contrasts Paris criticism of Prince Henry’s U.S. visit with American performance individuals. It argues that Jefferson, Washington, Madison, and Monroe valued ceremony, style, and travel, rejecting the notion of crude rusticity, and notes Lafayette’s reception drew admiration, not flunkeyism, while acknowledging enduring foreign critique of receptions for foreign dignitaries.
