Forced into an empty house cellar, they were bound and robbed of $9 and a gold watch before a passerby heard their plea and freed them fifteen minutes later.
In River View, a Chicago suburb, Edward Desnitz twenty two killed his fiancée Lillie Dittman nineteen then shot himself. Dr. John R. Haynes aged physician residing at 512 North Illinois Street was killed last night after being struck by a northbound streetcar while mailing a letter. He suffered a skull fracture and other injuries, died at his home. His wife died two years earlier in a stair accident. He had practiced in Covington and Indianapolis, was widowed, survived by sisters and a brother, and leaves no children. Funeral plans were not set last night.
Washington March 10 Chairman Payne and Representative Grosvenor of the Ways and Means Committee visited the President today. They kept their calls confidential but it was learned that the Cuban reciprocity question was discussed. No special message is being considered and the President continues to advocate reciprocity as stated in his annual message.
Payne associates favor a form of reciprocity with Cuba but Senate plans to amend war revenue are unlikely. President notes no explicit promises to Cuban delegates last summer, though there was expectation for market advantages. Senator Allison questions impact of a 2 percent Cuba duty cut on sugar. Opposition to tariff cuts cited as motive, not hostility to House leadership. Representative William Alden Smith assures Henderson the opposition targets tariff policy only. Smith also shares with Secretary Shaw a treasury route to aid Cuba.
A Manchu censor memorialized the throne demanding Wu Tingfang be removed as Chinese minister to the United States. The censor accuses Wu of corruptly retaining 80 000 dollars from Tien-Tsin silver refunds. Wu denies any misapplication and says funds were promptly handed to the government for disposal.
Peking March 10 Britain and Germany clash over China policy after Yang-tse accord. Britain blocks February indemnity payment to press Germany toward terms, arguing Tien Tsin control and Shan Tung mines motive. Conger hosts banquet for Chinese princes and officials.
Knight W. Joles blew off his head and both hands by placing a stick of dynamite under his head and detonating it in Perry Oklahoma. He had been custody on a charge of burning mail he was to carry and confessed he burned papers to avoid paying duties.
Upon arrival in Philadelphia Monday Prince Henry of Prussia was greeted by a large crowd, presented with the Freedom of the City, and given addresses. He will report to the Emperor after sailing this afternoon on the Deutschland.

He denied ulterior motives for his U.S. trip, toasted the Kaiser and Roosevelt, and afterward attended a performance at Irving Place Theater amid a dramatic canopy collapse but escaped unharmed.
Prince Henry of Prussia wrapped up an American tour in Philadelphia with a cordial reception by Mayor Samu H. Ashbridge and city officials. He arrived by train from New York in two hours, was greeted by vast crowds on Broad Street, toured City Hall, and received the freedom of the city along with a splendid album of addresses.
