In Hamilton on January 2, the manslaughter trial of Sylva and Leota Bishop ended suddenly when the defendants refused to call a physician. The case centered on alleged neglect in a faith healing situation.
A court sustained a demurrer claiming Ohio law did not require medical aid for the sick, releasing the Bishops after their child, burned and alleged to have died, was involved. The clan had attended the child and argued failure to employ medical remedies.
Fourteen witnesses testified in Havana today at the post office fraud hearing. Inspectors Hamilton Keys and Waters backed Inspector Gregory on accounts inspection and fraud amount. Pittsburg dispatch reports three killed and many injured when two runaway Monongahela branch cars plowed into Wilmerding and a crowded rail yard. Dead include John McFadden Mary Kinkaid Robert Trush conductor. Young couple James Broad Lizzie Minner wed after surviving wreck. Driver Charles Wright severely hurt. Carriages and depot damaged amid sleet storm.
Moses Ephs, in charge of dynamite at the Fortieth street shaft, was arraigned in New York on homicide charges after the blast that caused deaths. He testified there were twelve boxes each with seventy five sticks and that 500 sticks were used daily, with fresh supply each day. District Attorney Jerome faced a separate assault claim from coroner's clerk John Murray during coroner's court proceedings.
The hearing closed on Monday as the complainant sought an adjournment due to difficulty securing key witnesses. The magistrate postponed the matter to Tuesday next to allow further attendance and testimony.

Chicago reports detail two men turning to self harm to escape arrest. J M Walsh, charged with burglary, blew out his brains at the Revere House after barricading a room door, dying at Pasavant Hospital. In Paterson New Jersey Hugo Mohr, a self confessed anarchist, inhaled gas at home after arrest and died, having boasted of his beliefs.
Seventeen year old Horace Schroeder was found dead face down with a bullet through his heart inside D. C. Burns's grocery at Sacramento avenue and Lexington street. A bag of coins lay beneath the body and a recently emptied revolver was nearby, indicating he defended his employer's property at the scene. Schroeder hailed from Cedarville Ohio.
In Gallipolis Ohio two burglars were killed and Deputy Sheriff Mannering severely wounded while attempting to rob widow Mary Priest. Athens Marshal Fritzenwald is badly wounded. local and Athens officers had been tipped to the plan and lay in wait.
Mrs. Dr. Kinser died from morphine mistaken for quinine after a bottle was handed by his wife. Dr. Kinser took a similar dose and may not recover. The couple, married Jan. 6, were from Bristol. In Springfield a colored woman, Mrs. George Turner, died after drinking poisoned coffee and her husband and three children were hospitalized. a rat that fed on poison likely contaminated well water.

Tinged with acrimony and spirit, the discussion on the Philippine question featured DuBois pushing Manila dispatches as censored by the army though lacking proof. He claimed to be better posted than Secretary Root or General Greely.
In Washington on January 2 the Senate debated whether prose dispatch censorship existed in Manila. A letter from General Greely, chief signal officer, claimed no censorship and full press freedom, while opponents argued copies filed with cable firms were reviewed by military authorities. Beveridge quoted Greely and read a War Department note stating the press was free with limited censorship to insurgent zones.
