The Mexican ambassador to the United States confirmed reports that Mexico may adopt a gold standard, with officials studying steps toward change. The main obstacle is Mexico’s heavy silver production and limited gold, complicating the rush to gold.
Washington dispatch reports the Navy will shield enlisted men at Puget Sound from Bremerton vice and disorder outside the yard. The Hague convention article justified U S arbitration to prevent conflict, while fears of European intervention tested Monroe doctrine principles and American delegation reservations.
Dover Del Dec 30 J Edward Addicks won another assemblyman seat in a Kent county Ninth district special election called by the governor to resolve a tie from November. James Wilbur Rowe and Solomon Sapp were the tied contenders with 44 votes each before the recount.
The day’s election yielded Seyi with 34 votes while Powell rose to 4 percent, granting him a 192 vote plurality on a joint ballot. Addicks will now have a 2 y percent share on the Unitedates ballot, with twenty seven votes remaining for a choice.
Justice Cla baugh of the District Supreme Court hears Antonio M. De Vcasa a young Filipino petitioning for naturalization papers. He arrived before the signing of the treaty of United States and Spain. Local law requires allegiance to a country. No country to renounce leaves him unable to qualify under district rules.
A strong rumor in Memphis centers on a proposed gigantic merger of independent telephone interests. It would unite the Memphis Long-distance Telephone Company with the Memphis Telephone Company, backed by Stromberg-Carlson of Chicago and Harvey Meyers of Covington. Officials acknowledge interest but say no concrete progress has been made and prospects look unlikely.
A head on collision near West Middlesex Pennsylvania killed engineer Neal Daugherty of Erie and fatally wounded engineer Shallenberger. Four were seriously injured and about a dozen others hurt as orders were misread. Several cars were demolished and a list of the wounded includes Williams Gibson McDonald Strauss Miller and others. Six injured were taken to Sharon Hospital. among the dead and dying are Shallenberger and McDonald.
Anthracite coal operators and lawyers meet in Philadelphia to plan the mine owners' presentation to the coal commission. Testimony from nonunion miners will continue Tuesday, with operators to follow in a long sequence over ten days or more.

Judge Neal of Noblesville sustains Indianapolis in its suit to halt the Indianapolis Gas Company from shutting off gas. The decision says the city proved a prima facie case and the contract binds both parties to continue gas service until facts show futility. The ruling preserves state precedent and prompts possible appeal.
Chicago authorities opened two investigations into coal shortages and rising prices. Attorney General Hamlin pressed a probe into possible unlawful coal trade conspiracy, while a City Council railroads committee examined car reconsignments amid reports dealers hold vast quantities to boost prices. Hamlin warned dealers could be prosecuted if they held coal without contracts to curb suffering.
ST JOSEPH MO Dec 30 The city faces a coal famine with anthracite unavailable and soft coal nearly exhausted. Railroads have been seizing coal to operate engines under state laws allowing fuel confiscation during extreme shortages, threatening any remaining soft coal in the city.
Pennsylvania Railroad Company sales agents meet and decide to keep circular prices in January. They decline to renew expiring contracts with large buyers, forcing all consumers to buy coal on the open market. Philadelphia & Reading Railway is expected to follow this action.
An elderly man Eli Hyman died in Toronto as a pauper with $31,000 in coin and securities. His San Francisco wife Rebecca Hyman and daughter now Mrs Hart prove kinship and claim an estate valued at about $100,000. Attorneys report no other potential claimants.
In Bangor Maine John McGann of St Croix Hose No 1 Calais reports a dream led to using an old American flag as a bed comforter to ward off rheumatism. He claims after adopting the flag cure he has not felt rheumatic pains. He plans to continue the method alleging ongoing relief.
