New Jersey based International Harvester Company files incorporation with 130000 dollar capital to manufacture and sell harvesting machinery. It acquires McCormick Deering Plano and related firms, plans five U S plants and one in Canada, asserts no public stock offering and ready cash. Chicago headquarters likely. Akron Aultman Miller may join. Cantons report no invitation yet.
New York August 13 Wall paper manufacturers and dealers meet to plan next year business. They discuss forming a new trade combination as competition since the trust split has driven profits down. Prices for the coming year will rise about one half of one percent due to higher raw material costs. The meeting notes some favor a merger or agreement among makers.
The Society of the Army of the Philippines held its third annual reunion in Council Bluffs Ia with nearly 2000 delegates and veterans present. Gen Irving Hale presided at Arcanum Halls and welcomed guests including Gov Cummins and Gov Savage. A Roosevelt telegram expressed regret at not attending while 500 registered for the event.
Philadelphia Aug 12. A plan to establish emergency treatment hospitals at each of the twenty two American Steel and Wire Company plants is announced. Uniform brick two story buildings will cost near 200000 for structure and equipment. Each hospital will provide six beds, bath, sitting rooms, library and dining rooms with nurses sleeping quarters. A corps of six nurses two druggists and ambulance service plus a resident physician will serve each plant hospital.
Ex Chief F. W. Ames ex Detective Chris Norbeck and Irwin A. Gardner faced arraignment on blank indictments for conspiracy. A. A. Ames mayor and Joseph Cohen were absent. The second indictment lists the mayor Fred Ames Norbeck and Gardner with a conspiracy dated Oct 1 1901 alleging extortion and bribery involving protection payments from women at unlawful resorts.
Gen Jacob H. Smith is seriously ill at Judge James W. Bannon's Portsmouth home. Physicians were summoned as his condition worsened from a nervous collapse linked to the strain of his Samar campaign and later retirement news after his San Francisco landing.
In Charleston WV Aug 13 Judge Keller found John Richards and associates guilty of contempt for marching near coal mines and camping on forbidden ground to threaten workers. Each was fined five dollars and costs, with commitment until paid. Five co-defendants were discharged. Richards, president of District 17 UMW, argued jurisdiction over all confederates. The judge warned of harsher penalties for future violations.
In Pennsylvania miners refuse to accept a 1 percent contribution to strikers, prompting walkouts after a company rejection of wage withholdings. President Buchanan announced that the American Bridge Company has granted an eight hour day at 50 cents per hour for workers in the Philadelphia district. The general sympathetic strike ordered last Saturday will be called off tomorrow, with all strikes and boycotts ending after the New York conference. Enclaves of the company in Philadelphia will operate at 50 cents per hour under the eight hour workday.
John McLaughlin secretary of the Bridge and Structural Iron Workers' Union received a telegram at noon yesterday from the national secretary ordering a strike against the American Bridge Company. A second telegram at 4 pm canceled the strike. The company holds contracts in the state but none in this city.
Wilkes Barre and Scranton Pennsylvania August 13 leaders of United Mine Workers condemn Father O Reilly of Shenandoah for criticizing officers. Mitchell and district presidents defend miners while O Reilly replies that Mitchell cannot criticise his sermons. A mass meeting in Dickson City denounces the sermon as unwarranted and falsehoods.

In Pottsville Pennsylvania today general superintendents of the largest coal companies in the anthracite field held a secret gathering at the Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron office. They described it as a social affair with routine monthly attendance and declined to discuss strike settlement details. The spokesman said the suspension would end only when the men decide.
In Cleveland Ohio on August 13 a written confession ties Charles Janaski to the murder of Ignatz Wiurchowski. Janaski admits involvement with Mrs. Wiurchowski and implicates her, as detectives reenact the crime and insurance motives surface amid formal murder charges against both.
SHENANDOAH August 13 The provost guard of two companies, kept on duty since troops were called, was reduced to one unit as soldiers at the Pennsylvania Railroad station were withdrawn at borough officials request due to lawlessness. General Gobin has not sent troops into the Catawissa valley where farmers report crop and poultry thefts, and such action seems unlikely unless depredations worsen. The valley is large and patrolling it would strain the remaining force. Miners Strike for Unusual Cause Nashville Aug 13 Sixty five miners at Middle Ridge coal mines near Coal Creek walk out in protest of an unusual grievance.
Jerry Logan, an aged negro janitor at the State Supreme Court, sold himself to Gerald Stuart, clerk of the court, for one dollar. The written contract binds Logan to serve and obey Stuart until his death, with debts paid from the sale proceeds. Logan, born to slave parents about sixty years ago, has many white friends from the old regime.
Governor Henry T. Gage was arrested in Los Angeles by a San Francisco detective on a criminal libel warrant sworn by the San Feanders Call proprietor. He was released on a writ of habeas corpus.
In Quebec Judge Caron released Col. Gaynor and Capt. Greene, upholding objections to the habeas corpus petition. The judge held the complaint defective and found extradition could not be secured based on the documents before him.
In Quebec on August 13 Col John F Gaynor and Capt Benjamin D Greene defeated US extradition efforts over harbor frauds worth millions. Judge Caron discharged them from custody, allowing travel within the British empire. US counsel attacked the ruling while noting potential new extradition steps.
A dozen Moros surprised Camp Vicars outpost of Company G Twenty-seventh Infantry in Mindanao. Sergeant James Foley and Private Henry C Carey were killed and Private Van Dorne was badly wounded as Moros attacked with spears and swords. The incident may prompt a move against Bacolod.
Acting Governor Wright at Manila reports Herbert Lucker a Yale University teacher died of cholera on August 6 at San Miguel in Ilocos Norte province. He asks that President Hadley be notified.
SAN FRANCISCO reports the transport Crook has arrived from Manila carrying 344 men of the Twenty-fifth Infantry. The arrival adds to Allied forces in the region as officials confirm the unit’s deployment.
State Board of Public Charities concludes after inquiry at Illinois Eastern Hospital for the Insane that no cruelty occurred and that food and care are adequate.
