Rebels captured the city of Barcelona in Venezuela and began pillaging houses and stores, targeting foreigners. Street battles raged from Sunday, August 3, through the following Friday, with surviving government troops including eight generals and thirty two colonels taken prisoner.
Reports from Port of Spain dated August 12 describe Barcelona, Venezuela, captured by revolutionaries after days of heavy fighting. Government forces surrendered last Saturday. prisoners include Martin Marcano and eight generals. Civilians suffered, stores looted, and foreign consulates ransacked. U S Minister Bowen cables Cincinnati to proceed to Barcelona with provisions.
Washington dispatch says Barcelona has fallen to revolutionaries and the consul requests immediate protection for a vessel. The Cincinnati and Topeka are near Porto Cabello and instructions direct a ship to Barcelona at once. Captain McLean may lead or dispatch the Cincinnati with orders adjusted after arrival.
Berlin reports the Foreign Office says Germany knows nothing of any plan to land German marines at Porto Cabello Venezuela. If the United States had sent a vessel to land marines there it would be for reasons other than the Re ed on landing. Commanders of war vessels would not be beyond their power if they found it necessary to land a force to protect German interests.
The Navy Department received two cablegrams from Commander Mecrea of the gunboat Machias dated Cape Haitien August 12. He reports the attempted blockade of the port by revolutionists was spasmodic and therefore ineffective and that he has notified the consul of neutral commerce. In a later dispatch he states the blockade has been abandoned as the blockader is absent.

Two drunken hack drivers from the Frank Bird Transfer Company fought during Mrs. John Luth's funeral. Charles Wilson and Harley Ryan clashed over control of the pallbearers' carriage, endangering six women aboard, as crowds watched. Patrolman Kiefer intervened and a sober replacement carriage was sent. Mr. Luth, heir to the Frank Bird agency, returned home enraged and began destroying a pine board with a hatchet.
John Dietz a farmer living at Arlington avenue and Railroad street Irvington shot himself in the heart about 10 o'clock last night and died instantly. He had been ill for months but was in a buoyant mood yesterday and last evening, buying clothing and a hat downtown. He joked with his family and the money he claimed to have lost was later found in another room. Mrs Dietz discovered him reaching for his revolver under a pillow and the weapon discharged, fatally wounding him. Dietz owned a popular grove and picnic area that had drawn Sunday revelries until police intervention. He had recently recovered from typhoid fever and suffered sciatic rheumatism but remained cheerful. no satisfactory reason for the suicide could be given. Dietz was forty one years old and had no children.
News from Boise Idaho reports in Malheur county eastern Oregon outlaws attacked a Chinese mining settlement at Chinatown. They set fires to houses, robbed residents of money, and fled as victims tried to escape. Casualty details are unclear with some older notes of ages and numbers missing.
Utah and Salt Lake City roll out a royal welcome to Elks hosts as Judge Powers and Governor Wells address the crowd at the Mormon Tabernacle. A vast parade follows the formal opening of the Grand Lodge reunion with Elks from nearly every state and the Hawaiian islands, about 12,000 in attendance.

The Union Trust Company secured an underwriting syndicate for $600,000 of first mortgage 5 percent bonds of the Philadelphia Bristol and Trenton Electric Railway Company. William H Powers aged thirty lies between life and death after a drunken spree that left him gravely wounded by multiple gunshots. Henry P Gordon and William Russell faced attack as Powers cut tent ropes and fired at livestock and people, with Gordon’s son Harry injured by powder. Powers returned home, then fired at Gordon before being taken home with his wife and two children nearby. Russell was removed to a facility for care.
