Joplin, Mo faced the worst storm in its history at 4:35 p.m. with hurricane like winds. At least two killed outright, six fatally injured, many hurt, and roughly $300000 property damage across mining plants and homes. Spires, hotels, and churches were wrecked while utilities failed and streets flooded.
A severe rain and wind storm hit Omaha at 5 pm causing one probable death and four injuries. Robert Maxwell, 13, was struck by a flying sidewalk on Military avenue. ex mayor George P. Bemis suffered broken injuries after a sign hit him. Lawrence Taggert, 20, was seriously hurt by a broken billboard. Buildings shattered with roofs torn off and windows blown in. damages reported across downtown and at the Ames avenue car barn. Nearby Lyons, Nebraska suffered tornado-like destruction and Valley saw damage to the Val and Eddy Brothers’ general.
Reports from Des Moines to Lincoln describe a broad April storm bringing high winds up to sixty to seventy-two miles per hour and heavy rain or snow. Mingo and Valeria saw cloudbursts. some structures and telegraph lines were damaged, while Sioux City faced darkness and urban lights amid shifting weather. In Bloomington a near tornado windstorm damaged buildings and tore wires.
Washington April 25. The Cabinet reviewed proposals from Colombia for the Panama canal and from Nicaragua and Costa Rica for the Nicaragua route. Both will be sent to Congress, with differences in payment, rent, and sovereignty implications. Nicaragua would receive 6 million and Costa Rica 1 million if Panama is chosen, while Panama would yield no annual rent. A $7 million upfront payment is noted in both cases.
General Jacob H. Smith faces a court martial on conduct prejudicial to good order. Defense counsel seeks to simplify, admitting Smith gave orders to kill and burn in Samar to make it a wilderness. It warns of a critical agricultural season marked by grasshoppers epizootic epidemics heavy rains labor scarcity and high costs. Without relief the province may be ruined.

Admiral Prince Henry of Prussia leads a powerful German squadron on a five week training cruise around the British islands. The Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse suffered machinery trouble and returned for repairs. Seven colliers precede to coal the ships off Scotland using an American invention. The fleet will stop at Galway Bearhaven Kings-town and Portland.
Chicago April 6. The State Mutual Life Annuity Company of Illinois was placed in receivership today. Attorneys for creditors claim the firm operated as a get-rich-quick scheme and allege that stockholders and investors lost substantial sums, with large ponzi-like schemes cited.
Senator Hernando De Soto Money of Mississippi was jailed on information by streetcar conductor Orpha D. Shaner for assault during a disturbance. Witness Martin described a knife attack after Money refused to transfer or fare. Money and Fireman Hooper pleaded not guilty and await trial next Thursday with Shaner.
In Philadelphia a decomposed body identified as James V. P. Turner a prominent lawyer and former register of vital statistics was found in Fairmount Park. He disappeared Monday raising questions of suicide and autopsy revealed J W Turner died by self-inflicted gunshot.
Henry Schaub was executed in Newark on April 5 for the murder of his wife and child. The drop occurred at 10 10, and his neck spurted blood as the head was nearly severed. A barber by trade, he was said to be unstable and dissipated. his wife planned to leave him.
In Detroit on April 3 John Reinhardt of 6 Scott Street, 42, was shot through the heart by 16 year old Frank Colling after a dispute over the former’s children. Colling was arrested claiming self defense and that he fired two or three shots.
