The Free Press launches a $10 contest to recruit new subscribers with a reduced 5 cent rate for those signups by January 7. Open to all boys and girls under 99, the effort invites rural and small-town readers to participate, with prizes including $10 in gold and a year of The American Boy.
Secretary F D Coburn of the State Board of Agriculture releases a Kansas Christmas card showing Paradise flats north of here and a state summary of agricultural and livestock products for 1907. The card features a Kansas maiden image and a humorous letter from the Zevhyrs, Gladys, about a heavy alfalfa cutting and a playful choice of gifts.
Speaker Cannon announced committee assignments for the year. Kansas members recei ved key roles with Scott chairing Agriculture Calderhead on Ways and Means Campbell on Indian affairs and Reeder as Irrigation chair. All Kansans fared well though Scott Calderhead Campbell and Reeder stood out for chairmanships.
Hugo Kohl and John Miller traveled to Victoria on Thursday morning to spend the weekend at the Behan ranch, planning leisure and outdoor activities.
Students skated and coasted on the creek after chapel last Friday with the Model District School pupils joining in. Faculty attended the State Teachers Association in Topeka, while some plan to spend vacation at home. Hotel de HoBo and Hotel de Hog hosted a reception for football players in the annex before the season ended, with all enjoying a royal time. Misses Anna and Gertrude Ryan and Miss Magrane visited Chapel, along with Miss Miller of Saline. A new gavel at the Teachers Association is noted. Friday night a group of boys misread a train and hurried to the station, only to find a freight, then misapplied coats and mistaken pants with a room-mate.
Residents had eight days without lights as street lamps went out at ten. A faulty boiler, patched by railroad shop workers from Ellis, leaked badly. Haffamier and Jordan dismissed them and sent for Kansas City boilers experts. Repairmen arrived and restored full power.
A Topeka teacher noted a pupil named Willie smelled badly after a week. She sent a polite note to Willie's mother about the odor. The mother replied that Willie isn't a rose and to not smell him, urging that he learn him.
A group led by Harry Bellman and about six friends surrounded Bellman’s timber claim last Monday and killed over 150 rabbits. Guns cooled in snow as hunters gathered at the center, marking a drastic, noisy rabbit hunt.
A large number of Hays teachers attend the State Association in Topeka this week. A report from president W S Picken is expected next week.
A Sunday feature notes Mie Darkes teaching success at McCracken Enter prise following graduation from Hays Normal. Also reports a family reunion at Fred Solomon Sr s farm on Christmas day with attendees including H H King Frank King Geo Palmer Wm Gerken and Elmer Solomon absent. A Christmas tree event occurred at Buckeye Hopewell schoolhouse.
A lyrical meditation on ships at sea and the longing for one ship or many to return. The speaker imagines wealth, glory, and love depending on ships coming home. The verse pleads for calm seas and asks fate to bring the beloved ship home.
M J Mumrorp pastor announces quarterly meeting at the Methodist church this Sunday and Monday with Presiding Elder Rev A B Brown in attendance.
Mrs J H Ward hosted a Christmas dinner with guests including Mr and Mrs Alex Philip and Rev and Mrs C F Wiest. Various gatherings follow with the Misses Monroe of Topeka featured guests, local teas and card parties hosted by Mrs George Philip and others. Lectures, dances, and club events fill week ahead as the community marks the season. The issue notes subscriptions and holiday editions from local papers.

Mrs Mabel Runyon and her children traveled from Ellis Christmas morning to visit her mother Mrs S Crocker but arrived to find the home quarantined for scarlet fever. Benjamin Crocker had recently recovered and his sister was taken ill. Mrs Runyon had stayed at the Jos Runyon home on Wednesday and Thursday and returned to Ellis Thursday evening. Benjamin Crocker is now at Murray Wallace's home.
J F Jordan advertises a sale featuring a piano priced around 200, bed mattresses at 2.00 and 2.50, with wall paper offered at great bargain prices through the period after New Years.
Presbyterian Church led by Pastor W B Brown announces Sunday School at 10 a m and preaching at 11 a m with a sermon titled Our Bank Account. Christian Endeavor at 6 30 p m and preaching at 7 30 p m on Power. Miss Sophia Dickinson Mr McLell and Homer Myers substituted for absent choir members last Sunday and pleased the congregation. Sunday School Xmas exercises were held Friday evening with good attendance and gifts distributed at Brunswick Annex afterwards with a jolly time.
A Baptist church announces an important business meeting next Wednesday evening January 1st to discuss calling a pastor. All members are urged to attend.

On Thursday January 9 1905 RAND plans a local visit in Hays to buy horses and mules and to meet residents. He will stop in Victoria on Wednesday the 8th inviting owners to bring stock for sale.
