The Free Press extends season’s wishes and thanks subscribers and job patrons for their support in 1907. It pledges improved local news service in 1908 with a new press, more typefaces, expanded paper stocks, and a broader job department while maintaining high printing quality.
The Farmers Institute held last week drew many farmers who asked questions of Manhattan professors. Dr Burkett spoke well, Mrs Calvin spoke on better education for girls, and A D Colliver discussed seed improvement. Officers elected for next year are J R Chittenden as President and Geo E Palmer as Secretary and Treasurer.
High School notes mark the end of the 1907 term with Friday as the last day of school and a two week vacation to follow. Six seats are vacant due to a storm, snow disrupted basketball practice, and freshmen deny serious misconduct amid junior giggles. A girls cloak-room barter of over shoes substitutes for clearing house checks, causing distress akin to a money panic. A high school versus Normal School basketball game drew a large crowd, with Normal winning seventeen to eighteen, and future games hoped for.
The Manual Training Department of the Normal presented Prof Picken with a carved wooden gavel crafted by Lewia Christiansen and Henry Brown. The piece, a fine work of art, will be used by Picken to preside at the State Teachers' Meeting in Topeka next week, with Mr Bird delivering the presentation speech.
Carrie Rosa Meyer Reidel of Rush County born July 18 1881 died December 17 1907 at eight miles southwest of Hays from pneumonia after her son recovered from scarlet fever The funeral was held outdoors under contagion restrictions Rev Mumford officiated and burial followed at Mt Allen Cemetery She left husband George Reidel two years old son three brothers and a sister The family and community offer sympathy in this quiet rural loss.
The first annual meeting of the directors and stockholders of the U S Portland Cement Co of Yocemento was moved to Hotel Brunswick at Hays Wednesday evening due to heavy snows. Directors increased to seven with E Haworth I M Yost C E Isaacson J G Porter S P Kramer Samuel Anspaugh and H H Lynn elected. Officers named I M Yost president S P Kramer vice president E Haworth secretary J H Ward treasurer Ira Lloyd attorney.
University Mandolin Club of statewide fame announces January engagement. Tickets go on sale next week. Manager J. H. Downine promotes the event with upbeat assurances that nothing better on the road awaits audiences.

Lutheran Church announces 10:00 Sunday School and 11:00 public worship with Christmas lessons and music. Evening programs include a chalk talk on The Star in the East and The Magnificat. Also notes a new piano purchase and mattress sale, plus baptism at Episcopal services in G A R Hall and horse-buying dates for Rand.
Society notes announce the December 18 1907 wedding of George Wilson of Grinnell to Miss Anna Mary Cox of Hays at the bride’s Quality Hill home with Rev. Chas F Wiest officiating. The event featured a white satin Paris muslin gown, wedding bells, a banquet, and a return from a wedding trip as guests showered rice.
