Chevron Refinery Closure Threatens Southwest Local Schools
The Southwest Local School District faces a loss of major local tax dollars when the Chevron refinery ends operations in early summer. The plant provides about 10 percent of local funds and 6 percent of the general budget, amounting to over $500,000 annually. To replace it, the district would need a 3.5 mill local levy, while noting inflation and limited new tax approvals since 1970.
