In Wayne County near Jenny Creek a meteorite split, yielding iron rich fragments. Local blacksmiths forged the iron into horseshoes and nails. Frank Morris forged and sold a horse shod with the meteor iron to a farmer near Worthington, close to Parkersburg.

A violent tornado hit Murray Hall hotel at Pablo Beach near Jacksonville on September 24. Prince ONeil, thirteen, was killed when a horse and buggy were hurled into the air. Part of the beach pavilion, bowling alley, servants’ quarters, and carpenter shop were demolished. A freight car was lofted and bolted to the track as debris pierced railroad station flooring.
The will of Congressman Samuel Sullivan Cox filed in New York on September 24 assigns his entire estate to wife Julia Ann Cox as sole executor with power to sell. If he survives her, one fifth goes to siblings or heirs, half of the remainder to his wife’s sister Elizabeth Hardenburgh, and the other half to her brother James Buckingham or heirs. Witnesses listed are E. J. Fricke Peter Garvey and Maggie McDermott.
In Winona Minnesota on a Sunday night 8:30 lightning hit Tyler Spaulding's home. One bolt down the stove pipe and into the cellar, another bolt struck the stove injuring the mother and killing a six year old girl in her mother's lap. The father was knocked senseless but survived. The thirteen year old girl was struck on the body and leg, a nine year old boy was unhurt. The mother is not expected to live.
London reports the death of Wilkie Collins born in 1825, son of William Collins the landscape painter. He studied law at Lincoln's Inn after an early stint with a tea merchant. Collins authored many popular novels noted for dramatic structure including The Moonstone The Woman in White Armadale The Dead Secret Antonia Basil and The Frozen Deep.
An outbreak resembling dysentery sweeps Meadowville county near Puiuiri. The Sherman family first affected three weeks ago, with four Shermans and eight neighbors dying. About twenty cases remain, and physicians are unable to explain the outbreak.
Sam Faris was shot through the head and found with only small change after drawing a large sum of money Saturday night in Coal Valley near Charleston. Nine men have been arrested, but authorities have yet to learn definite details about the death.
