Tragic Train Raid At Sweetwater Kills Sheriff And Deputies
A bloody assault aboard a Knoxville bound train near Sweetwater Tennessee killed Sheriff W T Cate and Deputy Conway while escorting prisoners to the Supreme Court. Taylor and Carter led a chaotic breakout, wounding Cate and Conway, then escaping with the engine crew forced to race twenty miles to Lena before the gang dispersed. Carter and the negro surrendered later in Knoxville. Cate’s body remained at Sweetwater. A $5,000 reward, rising to $10,000, was offered for the four fugitives as pursuit continued into North Carolina.
