In London August 29 the Irish leader Parnell calls for immediate legislative independence. England reacts with divided Liberal support and warnings of danger to the union. Reported Dublin and Galway clashes heighten tension as Parnell’s stance fuels renewed talk of armed rebellion and Home Rule conflict.
In Erie Pennsylvania August 29 a meeting of the German Savings Bank stockholders to decide liability payment drew a dense, angry crowd of depositors. Police kept the peace as assignees announced nearly all stockholders agreed to pay pro rata, except William Slenger who was detained until signing. The mob menace and potential outbreak were averted by the deal.
Philadelphia August 28 Chief of Detectives Kelly received an anonymous note about the Felton steamer explosion. The note claims dynamite caused the blast but those aboard did not intend it, and urges investigators to clear others of malicious intent. The handwriting appears disguised.
The electric lighting apparatus in the Washington monument is finished and inner memorial slabs will be set. Public access is halted due to lack of funds to operate the monument elevator for visitors.
A severe thunderstorm struck Newcastle Pennsylvania at four this afternoon. Lightning hit the home of Timothy Mack, killing Mack and a visiting boy who sought shelter. Mrs Mack and a man named O'Brien were injured, but survived as the dwelling was left a total ruin.
In Rockford Illinois on August 29 ten year old Frank Betts was caught attempting to pass a counterfeit half dollar. Officers found two hundred fake pieces and the youth confessed to making them. Authorities will review the matter.
Paris reports Spain strengthens mobilization with officers recalled from furlough and merchant houses canceling German orders. Emperor William reportedly intervenes to favor Spain in the Caro lines matter as Spanish merchants threaten a German boycott and firms in Wurzburg and Elberfeld are cut off.
At Geneva Kane County Illinois a mysterious double murder near the courthouse claimed two of the town police officers, McNatt and Grant, both shot as burglars were suspected. Grant died en route home, McNatt died at the southwest corner of the courthouse with his revolver nearby. No suspects yet. officers were believed slain while pursuing burglars. Also described is a remarkable account of Sutton’s recovery after a dangerous rod injury during an oil well incident, with Sutton showing signs of rapid improvement and smoking in bed as strength returns.
In Olney Illinois, August 28, a man named J M Meyer posed as a washing machine agent. He sold a machine on trial to O W Gray for three dollars, then altered the note to 300 dollars and traded for a road scraper with A Morris, and later for horses with F Laudenberger. Gray says he paid only three dollars. Laudenberger seeks to recover the horses while Gray awaits payment. Sheriff Spring offers 25 dollars for Meyer's arrest. Meyer is about 32, five feet seven, black hair and mustache, Terre Haute claimed as home.
The American whaling brig Isabella, lost in ice north of North Bluff after sailing from New Bedford May 27 1884, with 23 crew aboard and a stowaway, was crushed in mid July. All were saved after four days on ice then moved to the Eira where food was scarce and one crewman Francis Pemro died.
Third Assistant Postmaster General Hazen received a telegram from Castleton New Zealand stating the local postal card contractor is turning out about eight hundred thousand postal cards daily. Yet many are unusable due to drying difficulties. Production shows slight improvement but remains unsatisfactory to the department.
In Duluth on August 28 John Waiseman was hanged for the spring murder of Farley. A small number of witnesses were admitted as a large crowd gathered outside the enclosure. At three o'clock Sheriff McQuaid sprung the trap and Waiseman died from a broken neck within ten minutes.
Fire in Chambers Street office of O Donovan Rossa damaged inflammatory anti English literature. Smoke prompted residents to flee but no dynamite exploded. Loss estimated at 250 dollars. owner uninsured.
Washington report shows 28,304 immigrants arrived at the seven main ports in July. In July 1884 the count was 32,772. For the seven months ending July 31, arrivals reached 218,178, compared with 276,690 in the same period last year.
Private R A Purdie of the Fourth Regiment Illinois National Guard died from lockjaw after injuries in a sham battle at the State Encampment near Ottawa two weeks earlier. Anger mounts at the First Illinois Cavalry Regiment which was blamed for the death. Coroner to hold an inquest. if guilt is found, arrests to be made.
A portion of today's incoming passenger train on the Natchez Jackson and Columbus line ran off the east end of Big Bayou Pierre Bridge, plunging into the bayou. Locomotive tender and cars were wrecked. Several injured include mail agents O A Anderson and W F Barclay, express messenger J A Lane, rakeman E T Cochran, R H Truly, R W Campbell, newsboy James Ing, Henry Rucker and J B Zeigel.
A public health scare erupts as Texas fever sweeps Erie County Pennsylvania with cattle dying in the city and surrounding districts. The Mayor and Sanitary Board inspected the worst infected area south of Erie, autopsies confirm Texas fever from contact with Texas cattle, and six cattle died in the city. A citywide warning urges owners to keep cattle confined.
In Fossil Gillam County Oregon three children died after a three year old boy drank concentrated lye from a can and soon after two of Rev James Young's children overdosed on laudanum. All three were buried today.
The new special delivery stamp will be steel line engraved and oblong 13-16 by 17-16 inches in dark blue. Design shows a mail messenger boy on the left and a wreath encrusted tablet on the right with United States and the motto Secures immediate delivery at a Delivery Office. The top reads Special Postal Delivery and the bottom Ten Cents with a small shield bearing 10.
At 9 o'clock this morning Roberts' glycerine factory two miles from Bradford was destroyed by a massive explosion. Superintendent Lewis fled as flames and a cataclysmic blast shook the town, Emery's brick building nearby also trembled. The loss is being assessed.
Acting Postmaster General authorizes hiring of additional letter-carriers after September 1 across several cities including Canton Chicago Cincinnati Columbus Des Moines Detroit Grand Rapids Kansas City Milwaukee Minneapolis Nashville Omaha Pittsburgh St Paul Scranton South Bend Springfield Toledo and Zanesville with varying numbers to bolster delivery service.
The Secretary of the Treasury appointed twenty female clerks to assist in counting the paper manufactured at Philadelphia mills for internal revenue stamps, increasing the workforce to forty five. The count is expected to finish by December.
Emporia Kan August 31 The coroner jury returns a unanimous verdict that Walkups death was caused by arsenic administered by his wife Mrs Walkup amid a feverish local interest. Testimony shows arsenic in viscera and links to Walkups last illness. preliminary examination set for tomorrow before Justice Payne.
An 11:30 am natural gas explosion at Marvin's wholesale cracker bakery on Liberty Street in Pittsburgh injures engineer Samuel Stafford foreman John G Higgins and six others. Stafford and Higgins suffer severe burns while others have facial arm and shoulder injuries. The blast scorched clothing but left most ovens and shop largely intact.
At 2 am the elephant broke loose inside a South Broad street tent, pulling sections down and startling spectators. Police refused aid. workers recaptured the animal. Resident John Kimberline of Altoona was struck and badly injured.
Bancor Missouri August 31 The Commercial reports a Plymouth home of widow Mrs Hannah Gibson burned with her body found among the ruins A neighbor on his way to the train discovered the fire It is thought Walter Paine her insane nephew started the blaze He was moved to the Insane Hospital at Augusta this morning
While crossing the Bad Lands an eastbound passenger train halted as a herd of antelopes stampeded across the track. About 1000 animals blocked the roadway for over a mile, forcing the train to stop. Hunters aboard the train killed three and wounded one to clear the path.
In New York on August 31 Druggist Améde misfilled a prescription for the Misses Hulse, daughters of a known citizen, giving morphine instead of quinine. One daughter died last night and the other is dying. Améde has fled the scene.
The White House in Washington reopened to the public today after cleansing and renovation during the President’s absence. It is now in condition for his return.
A Savannah pawnbroker advanced two dollars on a clock and cruet stand to a Negro thief, telling him the items were about worth that much, and the thief, when arrested, recounted the incident.
A facetious Western mob pulled a native man named Rasen to a teraph-pole by a neck rope and left him there. They hung a card on his hat reading High the poor Indian, a crude act attributed to local merchants and bystanders.
Ohio announces forty seven post offices will use messengers to deliver letters with a special ten cent stamp. Cities listed include Akron Alliance Canton Cleveland Columbus Dayton Defiance Newark and many more across counties such as Summit Stark Hamilton Cuyahoga Franklin and Lucas. Also noted are various local incidents and deaths including injuries to Pat ie James in Columbus and a fatality at Chardon quarries.
