Knoxville, Tenn Aug 31 The Tellico strike tightens with miners demanding last year’s rate and refusing compromise. A morning conference with operators ended abruptly as miners insist mines be run by non union men while operators say they will open them anyway.
The Afridis have closed the Kohal pass and halted a British column attempt. With both the Khyber and Kohal passes in enemy hands, the situation’s gravity has worsened.
Advices from the Behring sea by the steamer Portland show that the North American Commercial Co. season catch was 20 000 skins now en route to San Francisco on the steamer Del Norte. Last year s catch totaled over 20 000 skins.

Terre Haute Ind Aug 30 After consultation with creditors the Terre Haute Soap and Chemical Co has placed its business in the hands of a trustee for six months It is believed this will enable the business to be straightened out without serious embarrassment
The Japan steamer Justin brings news of severe earthquakes in Japan on August 5 followed by a tidal wave and great floods. A thousand houses were inundated and 200 persons were killed and injured. Sixty five Chinese villages were inundated.
BERNE August 30 two guides were killed and an Austrian tourist was seriously injured while attempting the Jungfrau ascent when a snow cornice collapsed and threw them over two precipices.
Speakers at the Illinois miners convention clashed over Mrs. Ratchford's proposition with Mr. Sovereign opposing and James M. Carson predicting a victory for workers in two weeks. Mrs. Wilkinson, a well known author from Baltimore who recently arrived in the city, was found dead at her home Friday afternoon due to congestion. The well known writer had authored several books and was a prominent figure in local circles.
