It sailed October 12 from St Lucie bound for San Juan with 3 million dollars in gold from Argentina and was due October 19. No word has reached owners. hurricane in the Caribbean and no contact. A pardon case in Montgomery County grants a man released after years in state prison for murder.
Mary A Cullen of Mobile warns Mayor Frierson that Chattanooga will be destroyed possibly by an earthquake or volcanic eruption. She claims to have foretold the San Francisco disaster and other events and once excited Memphis residents to flee.
In Newcastle Pennsylvania on October 23 three strikers were wounded in a riot after a strike by trestlemen at four Carnegie Steel furnaces. Strikers tried to stop operations at the Red Jacket furnace by stoning workers and police, officers fired, injuring three foreigners. More trouble is feared.
Five robbers blew open the safe of the Bank Vergennes in Murphysboro Oct 23 securing $100 in cash. Abraham Himml, mortally wounded, dies or is reported mortally wounded as the robbers escape.
The Supreme Court of the United States fixed a hearing on demurrers in the State of Virginia versus West Virginia regarding a debt contract originated before Virginia's partition. The session is scheduled for March 4 in Washington.
London on October 23 King Edward held a council at Buckingham Palace to discuss state business ahead of Parliament’s reopening. Prime Minister Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman was later received.

East Liverpool Ohio reports two fatalities from accidental gun use. Thelma Morgan three died after a gun was examined by Martin Wirnutt while he considered buying it. Roland Bens three was shot in the head by his seven year old brother playing with a revolver.
In Springfield Ohio a seven month old baby of Mr and Mrs Baldwin Whittaker died from internal hemorrhage after swallowing a broken glass shard. Older siblings played with the glass and did not notice the infant had taken it. The mouth and throat bled and lacerations were found in the intestines days later. Another death followed.
Well digger on a Canton farm struck gas while drilling a water well. The gas supplied enough heat to cook dinner, and operations will begin immediately to drill deeper for natural gas using available machinery.
A Ft Wayne Van Wert and Lima traction car derailed at a sharp curve in Lima Ohio and struck a tree but miraculously left passengers uninjured. The motorman lost control but no serious injuries were reported among those aboard.
James Shackleford of Ripley, a carriage painter, suffered a skull fracture after a trivial personal quarrel when he struck the sidewalk on the back of his head in Middletown.

Howell Hinds of Cleveland Ohio gains prominence as a major west coast mine owner by purchasing the Sunnyside mine near Denver Colorado. Reported price around one million dollars.
Canton Ohio Secretary Hartzel of the McKinley National Memorial association released figures showing total contributions of 556,564 and additions of 74,062 from investments and deposits, with receipts totaling 630,627. Expenditures amount to 178,886 leaving on deposit 451,740 in surplus profits.
The body of J. W. McWhorter, wealthy Albany stockman, was found in a ditch near the Harrison street crossing of the Cincinnati and Muskingum Valley railway. A scalp wound marked the head and a small amount of wood debris was present. He is believed to have been struck by a freight train. his diamond pin, diamond shirt stud, and watch remained on him.
The Bank of Lima, organized two years ago with capital stock of 50000 and its own block, voluntarily retires from the Lima financial field and liquidiates all accounts through Lima Trust Co. The suspension is attributed to owners’ other interests in mining and industrial development in the west.
In Marion Ohio a fourth pair of twins arrived to Mr and Mrs Murray Z Snyder bringing their total to nine children. The couple’s 40 year old father and 30 year old mother celebrate as Snyder works as manager for the Postal Telegraph Co in Marion.
At the Ohio state meeting of the United Daughters of the Confederacy a resolution commending Mrs. Jefferson Davis’s death was adopted and will be sent to Mrs. Hayes daughter of Mrs. Davis.
Capt Richard B Crawford of Massillon Ohio dies at home from asthma attack. 72, member of state board of public works, former postmaster, two terms as county commissioner.
The Toledo Railway and Light Co. won the city lighting contract for ten years at 45 dollars per lamp, with an estimated annual city saving of 50 thousand dollars.
