Greensburg Pa October 12 A bad collision at Hunker's Station on the Pennsylvania Railroad doomed Engine No 40 and Engine 430 with coke cars. One man killed and three injured as a fire fed by wrecked cars raged until help from Pittsburg arrived. Killed brakeman John Layton had been from Derry Station. injured include Charles Springer of Uniontown and Conductor Goodwin of Uniontown. Engineer Thompson of Uniontown seriously hurt.
Cincinnati District Court overruled Palmer’s motion for a new trial in the Wm. Kirk murder case. Twenty-eight errors were raised, mostly juror challenges. The court ruled the Pruden law constitutional, preserving Palmer’s access to an impartial trial. execution set for October 31.
Quebec October 12. Troops removed from Parliament area this morning and police guard set up. Forty thousand visitors today amid rumors of four suspicious workmen linked to earlier explosions. Cost to repair the second blast rises. wall removal may cost $25,000 with contractor Charlebois to receive a $1,000 reward. No session this year possible.
Washington October 11 mounted policemen patrolling near the city halted grave robbers at a colored cemetery. Two bodies had been disinterred and a wagon bound for a medical college was captured with three men, two of them colored. The white man Vigo Jansen, a notorious resurrectionist, was identified and jailed in default of $1,000 bail each.
Joe Buzzard William Weadener and Ditter Clark released from jail on Welsh Mountain. They broke into C Hershey mill near Seaman Place early yesterday stealing a safe and money amounting to 150 dollars plus valuables. They fled toward J N Woods fence. Woods and others chased them. the robbers fired on the pursuers causing bullet holes in a buggy.
An October 11 blast at Quebec's new Parliament buildings damaged masonry and windows, with a 12 by 5 foot hole in the third story wall. Mertel and Charlebois were slightly hurt as investigators seek the cause, with dynamite suspected and a $1000 reward announced for tips. Guards surround powder magazines and military stores.
A telegram operator and several others burst into the county jail at Ellisville Mississippi freeing a prisoner. The escapee was promised life by conspirators who then shot a doctor and fired on the freed man. The mob later shot the Negro, who died after confessing. Suspects fled on a train and may be returning.
Washington notes October returns show corn at about twenty six bushels per acre over seventy million acres, region between Mississippi and Rocky Mountains highest, but no state east of the Mississippi at 100. Drought reduces cotton and corn, with wheat poised to exceed last year by around 100 million bushels. Rye yields about 12, oats 27, barley 23, buckwheat 87, potatoes 88, and cotton average down to 74.7. State figures list Virginia 81, North and South Carolina 80, Georgia 79, Florida 84, Alabama 74, Mississippi 76, Louisiana 77, Texas 62, Arkansas 76, Tennessee 85. Local yield estimates show about 0.36 bale per acre.
In Cincinnati a hospital incident led to the death of fifteen year old Christian Turdoest after an elevator door failed. He reportedly wandered into the shaft area and was crushed when the elevator descended. A gardener named Wm. F. Thomas was also injured in the accident. The event prompted scrutiny of elevator safety at the facility.
In Lancaster October 1912 L Cauley aged 18 from Philadelphia shot Mamie Benson aged 14 in an apparent love dispute. He killed himself after the crime following months of letters and protests. The young woman, employed at a local factory, had faced his persistent affection and threats.
The Government raises the reward for information leading to a conviction of Saturday's outrage to 4000 with contractor Charlebois adding 500. Police are pursuing a clue with an arrest expected soon. Departmental staff were on duty and an infernal machine is suspected after four men observed near the building Friday night.
Amoy report on October 13 states French forces were outflanked and forced to withdraw to ships after a ten o'clock landing on Wednesday. The engagement left seventy dead and two hundred Chinese wounded or killed, with one public safety item lost and numerous casualties among the French.
In Mount Vernon Ohio an express train brought mangled remains to the station. Coroner Fulton held an inquest after relatives of Isaac McVicker identified the body from clothing and a skull fragment found near Ryan's Crossing. He was about sixty and known to drink.
Bob Campen N J October 13 A collision between two Pennsylvania trains killed engineer Joseph Carman and fatally injured the fireman of the other engine. Several passengers were hurt and both locomotives were badly damaged.
Hog cholera is committing considerable ravages in Champaign Illinois. In the vicinity of Rantoul the losses are very serious with farmer John Gifford reporting forty eight hogs lost in a few days. The disease is on the increase.
October 12 reports the death of Grerati, President of the Tribunal of Commerce, from cholera. The Cardinal of San Felice sent a gold cross received from the Pope to aid Catania sufferers. The Official Gazette notes cholera epidemic end and relief funds flow to Naples and Genoa amid 289 new cases and 137 deaths in Italy.
Pomeroy O October 11 five prisoners confined on various charges escaped last evening by crawling through the register from the hall below to the cell above where sick prisoners are kept. They passed to the inner hallway where keys were left in the door by the jailer. Escapees include Buzz Morrison J A Ward for horse stealing Dana Holzmiller Jerome McCune and one Boyd for petty stealing. This marks nine recent escapes.
Philadelphia October 13 An elderly stationery dealer named Thomas M. Scroggy is convicted of dealing in obscene pictures and books. He is sentenced to two years in prison and fined $1000, the full penalty.
In Philadelphia on October 13 delegates from across the United States gathered at the Continental Hotel for the inaugural meeting of the National Laundrymen’s Association. About 200 attendees participated in the event.
