Reading Pennsylvania reports a Laflin and Rand powder works blast near Cressona. two workers Samuel Feltzen aged 20 and William Sprott aged 26 were killed instantly. Henry Reed nearby saw injuries. several others seriously hurt as buildings and machinery shattered up to 150 feet.
A bad wreck of St. Louis Express No. 5 near Palatine New York shortly after midnight leaves at least five bodies in a Wagner sleeper with a death toll potentially rising to twenty five or more. The rear brakeman failed to signal the second section and the crash collapsed the cars creating total darkness. Doctors rush to the scene as authorities work to identify victims.
Pittsburgh reports a catastrophic failure at Carnegie's Edgar Thomson Steel Works in Braddock when Furnace C bottom gave way and molten metal surged out. Injured include Mrs Manning, Wm McElroy Lewis Fowler Miss Late Mrs M E Ingalls wife of President Ingalls slightly Wm Horth engineer second section Ingalls president of the Big Four. Ingalls private car Kankakee attached to first section was struck by second. all others escaped. Mrs Ingalls severely injured.
In Barnesville on September 30 T. A. Rodgers hardware shop hosts a singing mouse that has domesticated itself. The small prodigy trills and warbles like a canary and imitates mockingbirds, drawing large crowds curious about its remarkable musical talents.
Captain W. H. Jones general manager of Edgar Thomson Steelworks died Saturday night at Homeopathic Hospital from injuries sustained in the terrible accident at the plant last Thursday evening. His death came as a surprise as he appeared out of danger earlier, but he worsened abruptly and died shortly after.

Fireman Matthew Bye witnessed a brutal railway accident near Maple Ridge, Neegaunee, Michigan, where brakeman Thomas Higgins was decapitated as a train passed. The head was found several feet from the trunk, and eyewitnesses reported the eyelids briefly moved after separation, startling Engineer William Whitney and another brakeman. The incident occurred October 1 and left three reliable witnesses deeply frightened.
In Vernon Parish Louisiana a newspaper feud between A C Poole editor of the Vernon News and Sheriff Lee McAllpin ended with Poole shooting McAllpin in the sheriff's office after Poole entered with a pistol. McAllpin returned fire, killing Poole. Poole died later from a chest wound.
In Milwaukee on October 1 two workers Wm. Krueger and Emil Lohde were sent into a twenty foot deep tank to paint its interior with paraffine paint. The drying gas suffocated them. Vogel nearly died trying to descend. Krueger was dead. Lohde showed faint life and might recover as others pulled them to the surface with ropes after an hour.
Wm. H. Adams a Jacksonville postal clerk was bitten on a public highway near Titusville while stepping on a rattlesnake. He bound the wound and sought medical help but died from the bite after intense suffering. Adams hailed from Montreal.
Ricamonp Indiana October 1 John Wolters a 21 year old man died last night from injuries after a wild pitch struck him under the left ear during a baseball game. The accident occurred in the afternoon and he walked home before collapsing. He died about three hours later. No arrests have been made.
The Globe reports a 60 to 70 member meeting of Fourth District Democrats at the Sherman House advocating John L. Sullivan for Congress. Eulogistic speeches praised him and plans were set to secure the nomination when Hon. J. H. ONeill's term ends.
