Washington May 23 The President directed no liquor sales on drill camp grounds and this action is praised. At the crown jewels sale in Paris Tiffany & Co of New York bought three Mazarin diamonds for 425,090 francs. The four remaining stones went to European buyers. Proceeds total 6,500,000 francs with only a few lots left to sell.
In New York a four story brick building at 5 and 7 Hall Place collapsed during demolition this afternoon. Ten men were buried in the ruins, seven injured including five seriously and two slightly. Three narrowly escaped. Two of the wounded likely to die.

Fire in Lake Linden Michigan destroyed Neuman and Trelease dry goods, Tampico saloon, and surrounding blocks within minutes. Explosion blew off the roof, flames swept to the lakeshore, leaving hundreds homeless. Loss estimated at 1.5 million dollars. emergency aid from nearby merchants. Buildings and livelihoods gone in hours.
In Chattanooga Tennessee on May 22, James Vandergriff and Miss Nellie Nixon, sweethearts since childhood, wed after fleeing parents’ disapproval. A brother interrupted but the couple continued rushing to Rev Wilson, walking eleven miles in darkness with Miss Nixon's feet badly cut. She is the daughter of a wealthy merchant.
Jacob Leggett faced execution in Reidsville when Colonel Clifton arrived with Governor Gordon’s reprieve for thirty days after a sanity inquiry. The crowd cheered as the reprieve was announced. Clifton rode forty miles through the woods at night to deliver this message.

Morris, May 28. Henry Schwartz and Newton Watt, the Rock Island train robbers, were today sentenced to imprisonment for life. Leave was granted to file a bill of exceptions by August 21.
In Kansas City Missouri on May 22 police disrupted a Salvation Army meeting arresting nineteen members. Patrol wagons assisted in the operation.

OsKaloosa Iowa May 23 William Andrews an amateur balloonist fell seven hundred feet from his burning balloon to day and was crushed to death on a roof. The balloon had ignited in mid air.
Secretary Fairchild granted the Pacific Coast Steamship Company permission to bond dutiable goods for transport between U S points via the Canadian Pacific railroad. The ruling creates a competing transcontinental route not subject to Inter-State Commerce law restrictions.
In Galioris Ohio Bleeth and Morrison sawmill boiler exploded last Tuesday wrecking the mill and injuring five men. James Salgue suffered a broken leg and severe scalding while James Valentine was scorched over most of his body with little hope. John Dray had a crushed leg and near total scalds. Jesse Stone sustained head injuries but was improving. Charles Brown, a one armed veteran, died after brains were blown out in the mill.

Estimated damage is forty thousand dollars, with six thousand dollar nitro glycerine and unmixed material losses significant. No cause is known.
Denver May 19 The sleeper on the Denver and Rio Grande Salt Lake Express derailed near Sedalia at 5 am. Grace Leslie leading lady of the Kate Castleton Troupe was instantly killed.
