Rich Hill May 17. Damage suits aggregating about $100000 have been filed against Keith and Perry by various friends and relatives of twenty three miners killed in an explosion in the county's mines March 29 1888.

New York May 18 A plan to move mail and passengers between New York and Boston at about four miles per minute 230 miles in under an hour was tested in Boston with experts including Prof A A Dolbear Taft College. Inventor John Williams demonstrated a magnetic car on a raised single rail using coils to draw a magnet, delivering mail every five minutes and enabling rapid transit with minimal cost.
Frank Jasinski aged sixteen stepped from his father's saloon and fired at Frank Krowski and Mike Meka. Krowski died from a chest wound, Meka was injured but not seriously. Jasinski fled. he is linked to a local gang with another youth who shot a boy last Sunday.
New York reports that C. Rutcher of Bridgeport Connecticut proposes an electric fire engine using a motor powered by electric company dynamos. Wires would run from dynamos to hydrant boxes and upon alarm the dynamos would power pumps automatically at the scene, enabling immediate operation.
Joshua Clark, eighty two, once a school teacher, lived as a hermit in Dayton for twenty three years. He was found dead in his hut with a dead lamb as a pillow and two sheep carcasses under the bed. A raw salt pork dish was his last meal. He owned some property.
On May 18 in WaBasu Maine, hog cholera has appeared among Michael Shannahan's pigs at Lincolnville. Seventy five animals have died so far. No cases yet in surrounding hogs, and authorities plan strong measures to stop further spread.
New Castle Pa May 18 Two freight trains on the Pittsburgh and Western railroad collided near Mahoningtown yesterday morning. Brakemen A T Scott and Frank Cameron were badly injured with Cameron thought fatally. Five freight cars and an engine were wrecked. No flagmen out.
In Horton Kas May 18 Jos Pelz an Austrian in the restaurant business was seized from his home by about two hundred men and given seventy five lashes on the bare back for brutally beating his thirteen year old stepson daughter to force her to sign over her property.
Springfield Illinois, May 18. The House read a bill adopting the Australian electoral system a third time and set it as a special order for Wednesday. It also passed a bill imposing heavy penalties for adulteration of dairy products.
The Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad depot and warehouse in Norfolk, Virginia, were destroyed by fire tonight. The wooden building, about nine feet long, suffered an estimated loss of $100,000 for structure and freight. The cause of the blaze remains unknown.
Nelson Colbert a colored man was hanged at noon yesterday in Washington for the murder of Philip Wentzeil on October 3. His neck was broken by the fall after the drop, ending the capital case.

London May 21 The manager of the English and Scottish Law Life Assurance Company reports a £830 surplus from Pigott's life policy. He notes Pigott's death by his own hand nullifies the policies, but due to the distressing circumstances the full amount will be paid to the orphans of the deceased.
William B. Derby, cashier of the Mutual District Messenger Company in Boston, is under arrest on a charge of embezzling ten thousand dollars from the Western Union Telegraph Company. He allegedly raised monthly bills against Western Union.
In the woods near Coalburg Mines ten miles from Birmingham a crowd of black players craps. A quarrel over the game led to a fight in which John Wester was shot dead by an unknown assailant. Several others were slightly wounded.
The Rockton brings eight Vandalia officers and 15 men along with twelve Trenton officers and 311 men from Avia Samoa. Admiral Kimberly retains ten officers and seventy five men at Apia.
