In Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania on May 9 a wealthy Iowa lawyer obsessed with Miss Ethel Johnson pursued her with anonymous letters and street disguises. He tried to shoot or stab her when she was alone, then escaped. The Johnson family offered a $500 reward.
In Cincinnati on May 9 a U S Express Goacance dent Association outing ended in tragedy. Two laundry girls from Mund's hotel Katie Clark and Alice Larew along with Lizzie Tenhundfeld were boating on the Big Miami when the skiff overturned near the falls. John Bohan and Miss Tenhundfeld reached shore, while Clark and Larew were drowned.
Ohio health officials report from New York immigration commissioner that smallpox infected passengers aboard the Westernland on arrival the fourth inst. Twenty four passengers with varioloid were bound for Cincinnati Cleveland Fremont Orrville Toledo Wooster Akron Canton Worcester Sandusky Toledo Dayton and Palestine.
The Effingham Democrat was barred from mailing by Postmaster Lacy for publishing a report on a Catholic fair where prizes were awarded by vote. He cites anti lottery law violations, triggering local sensation and debate in Effingham Illinois May 9.
In Utica Mississippi on May 9, W. P. Colbert was shot to death by Cicero Harley after an altercation. Both men were noted local merchants. Harley is under arrest.
News from Butler Choctaw county says George H Ross a colored man was hanged to a tree for an attempted assault on a white woman. The hanging occurred near Butler in broad daylight drawing a crowd.
In Logan Ohio on May 9 a small child longing to Jacob Nater fell into a cistern. While bystanders sought a way to rescue, Charles Hoffenberger's boy plunged in and saved the child.
Delegates at large to Minneapolis are D. A. Dunn John C Hank H Clay Evans and J C Napier for governor George W Winstead uninstructed in the Tennessee Republican gathering held in Nashville on May 9.
Capt Bogardus once the champion wing shot of the world and W T Rexroat of Illinois shot 75 pigeons each. Rexroat stopped 65 birds while Bogardus hit 64. City of Peking quarantined on arrival from Yokohama and Hong Kong due to smallpox aboard.
A long running express robbery case centers on Clyde Jody and associates pursued by authorities in Pennsylvania. The year old investigation includes West Hickory Pittsburgh routes, a $50,000 haul, and a network tied to Gifford Brooks Hamilton and Bingham era telegraphing. Police say the suspect list features Brooks and Hamilton among others, with bitterly staged holds and planned flights toward Brazil, culminating in a jailhouse confrontation and sworn statements by Hamilton.
Lydia Ann Newby was found dead in her home at Sixth street and Kaighns avenue with a crushed skull and evidence of a struggle. James R. Moulton, her living companion, is jailed on suspicion after reports he planned to sell her body for money. A bloody hatchet was found near the house. Washington May 9 An important bill to ban prison or convict labor on public works and its products was reported to the house from the labor committee by Representative Davis. The measure requires contracts for construction or repair of public works to include a clause prohibiting convict labor and makes willful violations a contract forfeiture.
A major jury integrity scandal unfolds as counterfeit grand jurors are identified in Philadelphia. Sheriff Connell’s summons server Michael McKeown is deeply implicated. On May 10 in Anthony William Wilkins a colored man his wife and five children hid in a cyclone cave as storms lashed the area. The roof collapsed at 1am burying the family. Wilkins escaped and neighbors aided rescue. Five children perished and the parents were badly injured.

John Ferris was shot by Theodore Thorp in Port lands on Monday afternoon during a long standing Ferris Thorp feud. The wound was in the left breast near the heart. Ferris showed calm nerve, took the revolver, pocketed it, pressed his finger to the wound, and walked six blocks to a physician. Thorp fled but police pursue him.
In Salt Lake City on May 10 three masked men confronted Mrs Enzenberger and a female friend asking for valuables. The leader declared the ambush was for the stuff, man or woman, and the trio robbed them of diamonds worth $6,000 before fleeing.
