Ex President Jefferson Davis attended with dignitaries and veterans. the ceremony featured a battle flag, Masonic rites, speeches and wreaths amid a large procession and military escort.
Cariaco reports six thousand workers attacked McCormick's reaper works after a Robey street rally. Police clashed with the mob, firing in the air and at times. Four workers were wounded. several more hurt by stones and blows. one officer narrowly escaped hanging.
Thousands gathered in Atlanta on May 1 for the unveiling of the Hill statue. Dr Spalding presented the monument to Governor McDaniel as crowds cheered Senator Hill, Lincoln, and Grant eulogized by Mr Davis and Hon J C Cole Black. Davis and his daughter Minnie received extensive social attention as celebrations continued through Savannah preparations for the Centennial.
Washington April 30 The new bill in Congress regulates oleomargarine manufacturing and sales. It imposes taxes of 600 dollars on manufacturers 480 dollars on wholesale dealers and 48 dollars on retail dealers plus tax stamps on all packages. Domestic oleomargarine taxed at ten cents per pound imported oleomargarine taxed at fifteen cents per pound in addition to duty.
The funeral for Mrs. Smith, the maniac murderess who killed her four children, was held this morning in Port Monmouth. Her body was buried in the grave with Edna, the baby girl she murdered. The husband attended guarded and unaware, asking about her. Before mourners returned Rufus, thirteen, died from head injuries, making a second victim. Doctors say the remaining two children may yet survive.
Fort Smith Arkansas reports four more murderers condemned to death with July 23 as the likely hanging date if the President does not intervene. The victims include Wyrick, Davies, Tony Love, and Clark, with convicts Blue Duck Kit Ross Calvin James and Lincoln Sprolla among the condemned.
About 100 men marching for an eight hour day and a holiday confronted mill workers at Fuller & Rice's mill outside the city. A leader drew a revolver, orders to stop work failed, and a melee broke out with stones and clubs. One man was hit in the abdomen and another injured as police and sheriff restored order. employees deny any desire to strike.
A furnace chimney damper failure at the Singer works caused flames to puff from the doors. Fireman Tress Brown suffered severe facial burns and engineer Harry Wilson burned on the left arm from shoulder to wrist. Brown may have internal injuries.
In Nebraska City on April 30, eleven year old Della Shellenberger was sent to scrub stairs to a cellar. Ten minutes later her father found her dead at the foot of the steps with a throat cut from ear to ear, a bloody carving knife beside her. The murder is clear by the wound but no clue exists to solve the mystery.
About six o clock tonight in East St. Louis a disturbance escalated toward a riot. August Broadtoes and John Gibson were attacked by four men on Missouri avenue and beaten with brass knuckles and billies. Gibson drew his revolver and fired four shots as the assailants fled. two bullets pierced a saloon across the street. militia were summoned to guard the wounded. no arrests, but Gibson identified two assailants as Tom Stanton and James Ellis, striking defendants under indictment.
Charles Deane, 33, shot and killed his brother Leverette, 35, near Elkhart Illinois then killed himself. Leverette was struck in the head and abdomen. Neighbors say the Deane brothers were peaceful. motive unknown though long standing ill feeling existed. Charles had just returned from Sunday school prior to the shooting.

The Ohio Senate today received a report by the Republican section of a nonpartisan investigating committee after reviewing 550 witnesses over forty five days. It concludes four Republican candidates won by majorities from 932 to 1488 and are entitled to seats. Democratic members challenge precincts and claim four Democrats won by 200 to 600 votes. The reports are set as special order for next Wednesday.
In Racine County on April 29, 79-year-old Joseph Uhlier shot his wife at her home in Caledonia, then returned to his own house and killed himself. The couple, married to Esther, had lived unhappily. she had recently begun divorce proceedings on grounds of cruel and inhuman treatment.

St Louis May 3 The Knights Executive Board issues an order to declare the strike on the Gould Southwest System ended and the striking Knights will present themselves for employment to the railroads tomorrow morning.
