A Wabash train jumped the track into Chartiers Creek near Pittsburgh, killing the engineer and fireman. Taft laid the cornerstone for Dayton Y M C A. Others include deaths from accidents, political shifts, strikes, and notable society events across the United States and abroad.
In St Paul on April 30 Judge Sanborn affirmed $15,000 fines against Armour Packing Co Swift Morris and Cudahy Packing Co for taking concessions of 12 cents per 100 pounds on through bills from Kansas City to Christiania and other foreign ports. The ruling holds rebates as a continuous crime under the Elkins act and sets the framework for future packer cases pending Supreme Court review.
District Attorney Short of Ontario County New York arrived with a $90000 draft tied to mortgage and note settlements from the late Josephus Goodenow estate. Depositions were taken on two wills the first destroyed and the second missing creating uncertainty over inheritance and a potential distribution to numerous poor relatives in Ohio.
Columbus Ohio news reports former Supreme Court clerk Lawson E Emerson was found not guilty of embezzling 266 dollars during his tenure. The one day trial heard five witnesses, the jury deliberated just over an hour, and two similar indictments remain pending for trial soon. Emerson, who resigned amid quarterly-report irregularities, repaid the funds, but the court held repayment did not absolve the charge. Emerson lives in St Clairsville.
Gov Harris of Columbus Ohio desires every general assembly member visit state institutions to gain first hand information before the next session. Senators Gayman and Brandt from the county requested access to the city institutions including the penitentiary, and the privilege was extended. Gov Harris urged other members to do likewise.
In Bellewood, Ohio, the so called whitecaps loom again as Jackson Hartsook is assaulted by twelve husky farmers in white sheet costumes. He reportedly abused his wife leading to a divorce suit filed a week earlier. Hartsook has since gone into hiding.
Post office officials pursue a mail theft ring after several heists troubling Toledo. Inspectors follow leads, aided by a watch recovered in Inspector Hannen's box, exposing a possible motive or fear. A sensational claim of an infernal machine being sent to Inspector Hannen arose from the discovery.
In Chicago on April 30 three men broke into 52 Shillito street after forcing an outer door with an ax. John Morris was killed and his wife severely wounded during the attack. Police suspect revenge for a prior insult by Morris. Five men tied to the “Sholto” gang were arrested: Michael O Sheay Jerry Sullivan William Sheehan George Reed and James Hansen. Mrs Morris identified three of them.
Clyde Dixon a 25 year old from Pennsboro West Virginia committed suicide at his boarding house in Putnam using carbolic acid after a ball game. He had just been released from a five week illness and told a friend he might go home and end his life. He had been in Zanesville Ohio about three months.
Investigator William Corll reports neglect at Senator Thomas Kin s farm in Kinsman. He cites a broken leg heifer, a dead sheep, multiple dead animals, and twenty four cows and horses in bad condition. The farm is described as most unsanitary. Justice C. C. Bubb summoned Kin s to answer to the charge.
In Urbana Ohio the infirmary trustees sue Newton Ellsworth, a former inmate, for $261. They claim $3 weekly from October 1897 to August 1899 while he was a Penniless inmate. Sheriff Ireland holds the sale proceeds due Ellsworth and the trustees seek collection as he was not a resident of the state.
Johnstown officials say rescuers face 24 hours more as a 400 foot water wall blocks the mine heading at Mine 38 Berwind White operations Fourtwell. Seven miners have been trapped for 72 hours awaiting help.
Sandusky Ohio former chief game warden J C Porterfield declares charges false and says he will disprove them with Governor Harris. He travels from Cleveland to Columbus to review court records and plans to meet Paul North, head of the state fish and game commission.
By order of the general church committee a party of ministers and laymen have gone to Texas Oklahoma and Indian Territory to purchase land for a new Mennonite settlement. Fifty thousand acres will be bought and Mennonites will be given every advantage in locating in the new country.
Cincinnati attorney James Fora ker, brother of Senator Foraker, died at his home after months of illness from a cancerous facial growth. His remains will be taken to Hillsboro, Ohio for interment.
Danville Virginia on April 30 a carpenter H L Williams was seriously shot by his wife at her father’s home. Mrs Williams had recently left him taking their two children. She says he arrived demanding custody of the children.
Columbus Ohio. The state board of health approved the plans for a sewage disposal plant at Eaton. A large Greenville delegation requested a three year extension to complete the disposal plant there.
Franklin Arnold of Millersburg Ohio was badly crippled with leg loss and a hand injury years earlier. His horse ran away, throwing him and crushing his hip while tearing his lip and causing additional injuries.
An explosion of dynamite at the harbor works in Antivari on the Adriatic killed one person and seriously injured thirty others. Surrounding buildings suffered heavy damage.
After a two week acquaintance they eloped to Cincinnati and wed in Kentucky. Terry has been named official photographer for the Cincinnati Zoo and the couple plan to reside in Cincinnati.
Gallipolis Ohio resident Henry Williams and his uncle Abraham Miles clashed near town over alleged attentions to Mrs. Miles. Williams fired a gun, mortally wounding Miles. Williams was captured by officers.
Dayton Ohio. The Ohio Millers Association opens its annual convention at Phillips house with a large attendance. President M L Finnell of Osborne Ohio calls the meeting to order, and Mayor Wright delivers a welcome address.
Milwaukee reports enough snow on Monday to delay railway traffic while the statewide storm disrupted travel and affected transportation services across Wisconsin.
Mrs A J Elliot, 70, of Everett Washington, was burned to death at her daughter’s Lacrosse Wisconsin home when an alcohol lamp overturned while she heated a curling iron.
Frank Kane killed John Hicks in the sight of Miss Emma Simmons who was the sole witness and had been the focus of both men. The fatal shooting occurred in Washington on April 30.
Joseph Copper, owner of the Tiffin Postage Stamp Co., fell from a boat while boating on the Sandusky river and drowned. His companion William Ready swam to shore. Copper was a son of Frank Copper of the B. & O. Railroad.
Columbus Georgia today reports D B Mitchell was shot in the arm at Pittsview Alabama by a man named Abe Calhoun. Calhoun was later shot to death by seven or eight white men.
Mrs Lizzie A Williams who killed her two children at the Park hotel in March 1895 and was ruled insane to escape punishment has fled Columbus State hospital and remains at large.
August Kopp owner of the Union hotel at 1828 East Avenue Hamilton Ohio shot himself with a 38 caliber revolver. Jealous of his wife is cited as the motive in this tragedy.
The 18 month old child of Daniel Sutts fell from a window in Findlay Ohio. The child was rendered unconscious but revived, yet the body turned black and restoring color has proven unavailing.
Baltimore reports the steamship pier at Locust Point collapsed last Saturday. Ten people died and two Hungarian rivermen are added to the missing list, raising the death toll.
Fred Myers, 48, a baker of Maniaca East Liverpool Ohio, tried to shoot his wife then drank carbolic acid and died within minutes. Family members saved the wife. Myers had recently been a patient at the Massillon asylum.
James Leach a shoe string peddler was found dead in Merion city prison after strangling himself with two pairs of shoestrings. Authorities report the death as a suicide following an apparent personal crisis.
