A PFW&C limited express two miles east of Saem, March 20, at speed, suffered a boiler explosion that hurled Engineer James Richards and Fireman Charles Rhodes 400 feet from the crash, killing them. The engine and four cars were wrecked. eleven passengers were bruised. porters and crew suffered injuries as passengers escaped from the wrecked sleepers.
In Point Pleasant West Virginia on March 21 a conflict with Judge Jackson of the U S Court arose when the Keystone Bridge Company, unpaid for building a bridge for the Ohio Central Road, resisted a court ordered telegraph wire. A U S Marshal seized the wire crossing, the company cut the line and barricaded the bridge ends, and an appeal led to Jackson ordering a Parkersburg posse to enforce court authority.
The Senate Public Health Committee reports wholesale adulteration of butter in New York State. Officials found tallow oil and other substitutes in about half of samples, with ten of thirty samples genuine. No labels distinguish pure butter, enabling sales to saloons, boarding houses, and second class hotels.
Telegrams report Khartoum surrounded by tribes with the river as a barrier. Dervish Sheikhs may lead three tribes in an attack to seize the town. An Arabic paper quotes El Mahdi denying messianic pretensions and vowing to kill Gordon if met, and offering to give English money to the poor Muslims. He says Indian troops would resist fighting fellow Mohammedans if sent to Egypt.
In San Francisco Mrs John Schafer of Oakland lost a child and, in a reported frenzy, slit her infant's throat and then her own. The husband, who witnessed the scene, attempted suicide but was stopped by a policeman. Friends later visited and a French woman named Letrolli was driven to madness by the sight.
Herbert L. Jackson was fined ten dollars for mutilating a marble tablet on Daniel Webster's tomb at Marshfield. Mrs. Webster reported satisfaction as a new tablet was paid for, but the judge declined to file the case. Mitigating circumstances reduced the fine amount.
Boston police seized fifteen youths in South Boston for a string of small larcenies tied to an old cellar den. Cole man O Donnel, sixteen, led the group and was said to have just left a reformatory. Ages ranged twelve to fifteen as officers questioned three leaders.
Washington March 21 the Senate post office committee subgroup drafted a Postal Telegraph bill. It requires the postmaster general to set telegraph offices at all post offices on telegraphic routes and nearby offices with at least 500 yearly salary. Rates range 20 to 50 cents by distance with night premiums and per word increments. Government business gets priority, others follow, with sealed bids invited for ten year contracts to run telegraphic service.
Austany March 21 The Senate Committee on Public Health reports a bill to punish adulterated milk with 200 fine or six months jail. It bans selling diluted milk and unhealthy cow housing, requires butter makers to brand name and weight, and cans to bear county of production. Penalties reach 600 to 1000 and one year. State Dairymen's Association to enforce, with 30000 set aside.
A report from Osborne, Kansas, says fifty cattle in a northwest Osborne County herd are afflicted with a disease like the foot and mouth outbreak in Woodson County. A quarantine is set and a deputy guards the ring to stop movement. Osborne is northwest of the state, Woodson about two hundred miles southeast.
Simon Beattie, expert in cattle disease, reports no foot and mouth disease at Neosho Falls, Kan., after return from investigation. He notes cattle suffer from foot rot due to severe frost, with one farmer admitting seventeen cattle had feet frozen in a single night. Colts, sheep, and hogs feeding with cattle appear healthy and disease free.
James J. Rooney, his son John Rooney, and Andrew McNamara were arrested for systematically stealing ale barrels and beer kegs from brewers in New York. Detec tives say the gang collected kegs at night, erased marks, and shipped them out of town. Brewers report losses over $109,000 in the past year.
Springfield reports that William Been fatally threatened his wife in 1882. Their son John Dodds shot Been in defense of his mother and hid the body with servant Liddie Large in a drain. The body was unearthed today and Large was arrested. John Dodds believed to be in Kansas.
The Sanitary Inspector with police raided express wagons bringing meat from New Jersey. One hundred fifty calf carcasses unfit for consumption were seized and sent to the offal docks, causing consternation among the expressmen.
Mount Carmel Pa March 21 Michael Toney a sixteen year old boy was arrested Wednesday while changing a railroad switch to wreck an approaching train He reportedly urged a fellow youth to help him wreck the train and plunder the wounded passengers in the ensuing chaos
An explosion from a burning engine on the third floor of a feather shop in Rue Grande Truanderie trapped upper-floor occupants. Fifteen girls leapt to the ground, all seriously injured and some fatally.
New York report shows 176 failures in the United States and 87 in Canada, totaling 213 for the week, down from 216. Failures were notably scarce in the Western and Pacific States and in New York City, with a slight decrease in Canada.

A party of one man and three women traveling to Rock Island were hit by a runaway horse that leapt into their wagon. Mrs. D A Gartley was severely injured and taken for care but later improved at home. The other passengers on the rear seat escaped unharmed.
In Danville Illinois three prisoners Will Mengel Ed Crosby and Thomas Bracken with an assisting man named Carter overpowered the jailer at breakfast seized his keys and locked him in a cell. The four escaped and are at large. Mengel Crosby and Bracken led a gang previously captured after robbing nearly a dozen stores. Carter is a noted pickpocket.
Tacoma March 23 A fire continues to burn in the Newcastle Coal Mine owned by the Oregon Improvement Company. After long struggle the management has gained control but officials now believe shutdown and flooding are necessary to end the blaze.
French communists Russian nihilists and German socialists celebrate the thirteenth anniversary of the Paris commune in New York. Speakers include Herr Most and Victor Drury.
London March 23 report from the steamer City of Montreal states that on her voyage she passed an iceberg estimated at 200 feet high and forty feet long after arriving at Queenstown yesterday.
Providence news reports Journal editor George W. Danielson, driving with his family, was struck by a paralytic shock in the right arm and leg this afternoon. He is reported comfortable this evening.
