Death of Gen Johnston a Confederate veteran’s long life ends
Gen Joseph E Johnston died after a three week heart illness aggravated by a cold at his Washington residence shortly after 11 pm Saturday. The funeral is set for Tuesday at St. John’s church with burial at Greenmount Cemetery. He was born in 1807 in Cherry Grove Virginia and graduated West Point in 1829 alongside Robert E. Lee. He served in Mexico, the Seminole War, and the Civil War, leading the Army of the Tennessee before being relieved in 1864 and later surrendering with Lee at Appomattox after negotiations with Sherman and President Davis.
