Tecumseh, Mica, March 19. School children found the dead body of Aaron Palmer, frozen face downward, in a mud swamp near town. Palmer, a desperado who wounded two merchants, A. P. and J. B. Anderson, in a November shooting, fled and eluded a large reward. The cause of death is not yet determined.
Washington on March 19 Brigadier General Howard was nominated for the rank of Major General in the army to succeed General Pope who is retired. The action elevates Howard amid reshuffles at the top of the service.
The Russian Government moves to develop the petroleum fields of the Apsheron Peninsula and has convened scientists engineers and oil producers to meet in Baku on March 27 to discuss promoting the oil trade.
A weekly tally shows 225 business failures in the United States and Canada reported to a mercantile agency. The week figures mark a decline from prior weeks, with a noted drop from the previous period's higher totals.
Omana Nebraska March 18 Hundreds flee as ice chokes the Union Pacific bridge on the Loup river causing bottom lands to overflow miles and threatening Columbus. The Platte River near Columbus is also high and overflows water rising with no reported deaths yet and railroad travel endangered.
A Pottsville Pennsylvania tunnel collapse at the Pottsville and Mahoney railroad site trapped workers. Five dead, four fatally injured, about a dozen badly hurt. International workers were among the uninjured fleeing the disaster scene. Coroner to hold inquest. contractor Edward Kelly reported.
To Be Arbitrated New Orleans March 18 The strike on the Texas and Pacific railroad and other Gould Southwest lines nears settlement by arbitration in the Hall case. Knights of Labor promise no interference with freight trains and aid in passenger service. U S Marshal withdrawals after property possession. Freight and passenger trains resume with belief of reinstatement for Hall though full agreement may take days.
Curiaco March 18 The Barbed Wirs8 Manufacturing Association met at its headquarters with 95 percent of U S barbed wire manufacturers and reps from plain wire firms and jobbers. The pledge to uphold all agreements was signed unanimously. A ten percent price increase was announced and the combined group was seen as strengthened to maintain the raise.
Noah Connecticut March 18 Intensely excited town learns five boys aged about seventeen formed a group called Night Hawks two weeks ago to rob and murder. They planned to burglarize stores and waylay Doctor Minor and Getty Potter, seize boodle, and flee on the midnight train to New York. One member opposed the plan and joined to thwart the scheme.
Cincinnati report says Louis Mosser bought a pair of stockings last Saturday and wore them Sunday. By Monday he could not rise, and his condition worsened with severely swollen feet and legs. A physician suspects the dye in the stockings contained poison.
In Wheeling West Virginia on March 18 the jury convicted James McCord in U S Court of counterfeiting government stamps and brands and manufacturing cigars without license. He received fifteen months and five days in prison and a $200 fine. He refused clemency by betraying accomplices. James Neir wanger, a boy who helped him, was held for the Grand Jury.
Baltimore March 18 A meeting of oyster packers in this city resulted in an agreement not to pack any oysters after April first with a $1000 penalty. Previously the season ran until May 1 but Chesapeake Bay beds have been so depleted that fears of destruction arise.
Rome reports two fatal cholera cases in Candia and two in Palio along with seven deaths in Padua as of March 18, reflecting a regional outbreak.
Warren Pa March 18 Jacob Winger contractor and Oscar Winger Win Warke and Elmer Margel drillers were fatally burned today when natural gas exploded and ignited from the boiler at a newly shot well owned by N Moore and Co at Tiona.
Washington March 1 The Ways and Means Committee adopted the entire free list of the Morrison bill adding logs to it Logs were omitted from the original bill Mr Hewitt of New York proposed a resolution to request Canada to remove duties on lumber as part of reciprocity discussions
In Boston Supreme Court Judge Holmes hears alimony for Maria Norcross against Alvin C. Norcross ahead of a divorce. The 1865 meeting in Littleton led to a claimed common law marriage. Norcross later wed Mary Freeze in 1883 after ejecting Maria from their home. Accusations include a $10,000 bond theft and misused property. General Butler represents Mrs. Norcross.
A Mud Springs officer reports Geronimo and his band surrendered unconditionally after a skirmish ten miles south of San Bernardino with Mexican forces claiming the victory. Mexican troops crossed the line to Maus camp seeking prisoners, but Maus refused. The situation alarms officials. General Crook’s arrival is awaited and Maus seeks troops to avert a potential massacre.

Omana Nep March 22. Ed Johnson, an outlaw who killed his employer last Saturday, holed up in a barn near Oakland and resisted capture. He killed two men and wounded several others before the barn was set ablaze. Johnson was shot as the fire raged, perishing in the flames. his body lay among oats riddled with bullets after the blaze ended.
St. Louis March 22. The anticipated East St. Louis switchmen strike has not occurred yet. A general strike hit Kansas City, leaving freight business nearly at a standstill. About 230 switchmen are idle, forcing 150 engineers and 150 firemen to be idle as well.
A furious snow storm swept Michigan's upper peninsula Sunday dropping two feet of snow. Railroads are blockaded with no trains run yesterday and few today in Marquette area.
A denunciation argues feminine fashion fuels a large scale killing of native birds. It claims men and boys hunt innocents to adorn bonnets, leaving gulls scarce along the coast and meadowlarks nearly extinct in many areas.

One end of a rope was tied to the timber and the other around his neck he jumped off his perch his head nearly severed Frances leaves a wife and eight children He was a sober hard working man No cause for the act is known.
DouBouQuE Iowa March 21 heavy snowstorm begins yesterday afternoon and lasts until late this morning. Snow depth exceeds two feet with drifts burying fences and collapsing several frail buildings under weight.
About one o'clock yesterday morning lightning struck a Watertown house owned by Wm. McGaffey and Clarence Cook. One side of the building was demolished. Two of McGaffey’s daughters, Sarabh, twenty, and Eliza, eighteen, were killed. The nearby ground was torn up by the bolt.
In Carro Illinois on March 21 the Sanders and Son grocers safe was blown open but the noise drew police and the burglars fled, leaving the store without any loot.
Miss Barbara Haumesser of Madison filed suit against the estate of late John Farner County Coroner seeking one half of his estate alleging a will promise. A jury awarded her 3050 damages in the trial held last night.
Washington March 1The Secretary of the Treasury will on Monday issue a bond sale totaling 400000 at three percent. The issue will mature May 1 and will be sold for cash to investors.
Foreign notes report the death of Maria Heilpron in Nice on the 21st, leaving a 13 year old daughter and £120,000. Also noted are a £800,000 Greek loan in London and daily Socialist meetings in Berlin with thousands attending, police told to monitor them.
