The assailant reportedly said he aimed to kill the President and all other judges.
In Pittsburg Penn March 8 sixteen Morehead and Co mill workers were burned when they accidentally released gas under a boiler. The gas ignited from lamps, injuring several men. John Williams and Thomas Welsh, both 30, were seriously hurt and not expected to recover.
Philadelphia mourns as prison inmates confront the gallows. An old man, Barrett, bedridden with dropsy, dies from shock when the doorway closes for the hanging. Taylor, condemned to die, suffers a tremor and spasms during the two hour wait, shaking in fear at his cell.
A Dunkirk House boarder overturns a lamp in a three story balloon framed building in Bradford. The fire quickly spread to a storehouse warehouse and adjacent frame structures. Two men identified as Barry Freel and J L Martin died. Henry Moyer and O H Hiller survived with severe burns. About thirty to forty boarders escaped in night clothes. Loss about $10,000 with under ten thousand insured.
A boy on Walnut near Highth was attacked by three men who tried to seize his basket. Onlookers stopped them and one suspect named George Taylor was arrested after the boy identified him. The basket reportedly held bonds and securities valued at 40,000, sent to a bank. Taylor is jailed in $1,000 bail. Police label the trio as expert thieves aware of the valuables.

In Fairview Pennsylvania on March 8 reports describe a reign of terror in the coal regions. Three brutal murders occurred near Clearfield and several mine structures have been bombed. Mine superintendents and coal company officers have been ordered to leave the area or face death as unrest grows from miner hardships and anarchist agitation.
Provo Ohio March 7 Mrs Rike an aged Covington resident has twelve children sixty six grandchildren ninety nine eleven and three great great grandchildren totaling one hundred eighty descendants with one hundred thirty five living.
Battermore Maryland March 8 The Herald will print Monday full reports from all sections of Maryland showing that the condition of wheat roots and grain is everywhere injured by new weather. It does not appear likely the crop will reach a percentage of the average.
A Missouri Pacific strike in Atchison and nearby towns keeps mail cars from moving except with full trains. Post Office Inspector warns strikers of liability. later, officials order all passenger trains to run with regular coaches, and freight engines are targeted for a possible return to work. Multiple cities report little change and discharges at depots.
Telegraphed dispatches report General Sir Redvers Buller’s rear guard reaching Korts amid fatigue and distress after a tiresome route from Gakdul. Soldiers faced heat, harassment, and enemy sharp shooters, with many wounded. Brackenridge praised by Bracke and Dennison. Mahdi orders advance upon Korti with a 45,000 reward to Metemneh’s lieutenant.

March 9 in Grand Rapids Michigan Rus tran a Dutch worker aged thirty eight suffocated in a steam box at the Grand Rapids Veneer Company factory He entered the steaming chamber where the temperature rose to a dangerous level and he was burned or stewed to death in the device.
Three Laflin Rand power works mills exploded four miles west of Newburgh NY this morning killing two workers and severely injuring another.
Washington March 5 Senate executive session takes up Cabinet nominees with Bayard first on the list amid Riddleberger’s objection to his patriotism. Session adjourned with all nominations postponed to tomorrow. March 6 a resolution seeks Interior confirmation on patents for lands tied to the New Orleans and Baton Rouge Road. Adjourned. Secretary Bayard resigns amid debate on patent bills for theBackbone road with Van Wyck and Teller participating.
